Top grade used golf balls which are described as like new are called Grade A or Grade 1. Balls with minimal blemishes, but still play like new are referred as Grade B or Grade 2, and balls that have many marks and blemishes are considered Grade C or 3. Grade 3 balls are perfect for first timers, who just want to practice.

As a golfer gets better, the best idea would be to move to a better grade of ball. This does not mean to rush off and buy the most expensive balls that you can find. Not only are they designed with a large rubber core, they are the most common genre on the market, and still relatively inexpensive. The 3 piece ball is multilayered, which gives you more control and spin on your shots, but it wont fly as far as the 2 piece. If you are able to maintain consistent accuracy, and you are above beginner level then the 3 piece ball is something you will want to consider. For the expert player who wants to go the distance, and isnt concerned about cost, then the high performance golf ball is what will give you that special edge and give you much more control and spin than the 3 piece.
