Should I Be Loyal To My Airline?
Tom Tessin
The reason this question may be asked all the time is because some people may look for a credit card for a particular airline. What they may find is that there are also credit cards out there that just focus on travelling. The difference between a travelling credit card and an airline credit card is that an airline credit card will give you a lot more rewards compared to a travel card. Now let's get onto the questions you should ask yourself.
Does the airline fly out of your local airport?
If you tend to travel a lot, you'll already probably know the answer to this but to get the right answer, simply check your local metro airport's website. On the website they generally will tell you who flies out and when. If you find that the airline you're looking at doesn't or only has a few flights leaving daily, then you probably want to stick with another airline. If your airport is a major hub for that airline, you're on the right path.
Are you happy with them?
Like anything in life, if you're going to be loyal to something, you're going to want to know how the program works and treats you. The best thing to do before applying for an airline based credit card is to fly that airline at least two or three times to get the feel for the airline and how the customer service works. You'll find that you'll get treated the same each time you fly. Of course, there will be that occasion where you don't receive this great service but this will happen with everyone.
Once you fly with this airline a few times and become comfortable with their planes and staff, start looking at the credit cards they have to offer. You'll be amazed at what kind of deals you can get. Most credit cards on the market will usually give you two miles for every dollar you spend and you may find that sometimes they have promotions that double, triple them, etc. Make sure you read the terms and conditions before you apply for the card to see if it's something you can actually benefit from.
When you finally apply for that airline credit card if you decide on being loyal with them, make sure that you use that card with not only your plane ticket purchases but other purchases as well. Airline credit cards can also work on general merchandise that will give you miles as well. As noted above, make sure you visit the terms and conditions to see what kind of benefits you'll get. Once you start getting the free tickets because of your spending, it'll be the best feeling in the world and it's all because of a credit card.
