What Is Galvanised Shelving?
Big Dug
Galvanized shelving is something that many people have heard about as it is used in numerous different settings, but what is galvanization, and what benefit does galvanized shelving have over other shelves? Well, galvanization refers to a number of processes in which steel is coated with zinc to provide a physical barrier against rusting. For galvanized shelving this means treating the frame, or the shelves, or both, whatever the steel parts are. There are also several techniques for galvanization, including a new environmentally friendly process that does not need the zinc to be molten to bond with the steel. Additionally, the new process leaves the metal in good condition for coating with paint and other substances, so galvanized shelving can come in a range of colors and finishes to suit any environment.
The most important features of galvanized shelving are its strength, from the steel, and its longevity, from the protective zinc coating. And, since zinc is reputed to be the fourth most common metal used in industry, there's no shortage of galvanized metal going around. Interestingly, the most common metal in production is iron, which is also a large part of the galvanized shelving, since iron is the main ingredient of steel.
You wouldn't want to choose shelves made from the other two metals that are more commonly used than zinc, first is aluminum, used frequently for making drinks cans. This metal will not be useful because it is quite soft and malleable, so holding heavy items for lengthy periods could cause it to buckle. Aluminum is also quite reactive, and is used as a catalyst in many chemical reactions, even as a component of explosives. Copper is the last common metal, and is mainly used for electrical wires because of its great capability for conducting electricity. Copper shelves therefore would be somewhat of a nuisance in offices, or other environment in which static electricity is generated. It is unlikely that anyone will want to use those shelves if they risk an electric shock every time they need to move an item.
Thus, galvanized shelving is probably the strongest and most long-lasting type of shelving available to consumers, whether to the general public, or to industry. If galvanized shelving had not been developed then we might not be able to have as extensive storage facilities as we do today. Ordinary steel shelves would rust, so you would need to move items around the warehouse in order to perform maintenance on rusted areas. It is also very likely that the steel used to made the shelves would have to be much thicker, and therefore heavier to last as long as galvanized shelving. This is because cleaning the rust off of shelves is an abrasive process that will remove layers of steel each time it is done.
Therefore, for heavy-duty uses, and for long term storage solutions, galvanized shelving is the best type of shelving. It is the up-to-date, technologically advanced and proven answer for the age-old problem of storage.
