A personal development plan is a road-map to plan your goals and aspirations in the area of your self development. It is similar to setting goals, however it involves a much more detailed and thorough analysis. It is not just a listing of personal development goals that you desire, but rather it is a plan for the whole process of achieving those aspirations.
Due to the nature of self improvement, using a different approach to the traditional goal setting practice would make it much more effective and suitable. This is why for all personal development goals we should have a separate personal development plan for it.
Many people take goal setting very seriously. Especially those who are ambitious and desire success. However, sometimes we tend to focus less on personal development goals. We are usually more focused on health, career and financial goals. Goals in other areas such as religious goals, emotional aspirations and personal development goals are neglected.
Neglecting personal development goals can be a very costly mistake. When we are busy trying to achieve all our other goals, it is easy to forget about improving oneself and learning more skills. Not only that, once people start achieving and seeing success, complacency will start to creep up if they do not have a personal development plan. And as you know, complacency is one of the biggest adversary to success.
Having a personal development plan helps us ensure that we are continually working on ourselves to prevent this complacency. In a nutshell, the basic premise of a personal development plan involves 3 steps ;
1. Identify your current situation - What are your strengths, weaknesses, skills, abilities etc. To prepare your personal development plan, you will first need to identify what is your current level.
2. Identify the wanted state - Next you identify where you want to be instead. To achieve your goals, what are the strengths that you need? What are the weaknesses that you must eliminate? What skills or ability do you need to have? What needs to be worked on for you to get to the next level.
3. Coming up with a plan to fill that gap - In the final step we identify a plan on how to fill the gap between where we currently are and where we desire to be. These includes planning for; resources that needs to be obtained, who/where to learn from, scheduling the action items and setting a time line to achieve it.
The basic premise is pretty simple, however it is important that you spend some time on it and come up with a good plan so you'll be headed the right way and not waste any time.
Having a personal development plan helps you make sure your knowledge, skills and abilities are constantly upgraded. Because when all is said and done, it is your knowledge that ultimately affects the quality of your lives and your level of success. Don't neglect it.
