Tender Loving Glove Care
James Brown
An indispensable apparatus for baseball sport is a pair of gloves. The best of these items are those that are made from top materials such as good grain leather. At some point, gloves become personally attached to baseball players. When gloves are afforded the treatment that should be adequately given to any leather item of high quality, they are sure to stay for long and serve their purpose to the game for several more years.
Gloves should be stored in room temperature. Storing them in the attic, the car trunk or in garage is a big no-no. Naturally drying a sweat-soaked or wet glove is the way to do it. Avoid placing the gloves on radiators and heaters, window ledges of automobiles or in cold garages.
An owner should wipe his gloves clean only with the use damp, but not wet rags. Soaking the glove or cleaning it with household oils or cleaners will cause damage to its leather. When applying glove oil on the inside and out dry-looking glove's leather, do so with ample amount. Also, only the right or equivalent oil should be applied on dry gloves. Oil application should not be done on wet gloves. A glove should, in fact be, absolutely dry when the oil touches its surface.
Forming the inside part of newly-brought gloves should be done with the owners' hand, and not with others' that can lead to the unwanted reshaping of the leather. Similarly, the pocket should be shaped accordingly into a right-sized and wider pocket, as needed. Gloves shouldn't be stored closed and flat; doing so will make the pocket "unnatural" and "thin."
Another trick to retaining the glove's perfect form is to shape your pocket to allow the tip of the thumb to close at your ring finger's tip. It is a no-no to allow your thumb to close at the hand's middle finger.
Storing the glove inside out in open position with either the use of one or two balls, over the batting helmet inside the bat bag, or with an old glove-like item will be a good idea. It is never advised to throw gloves in bat bags laying out on the "road-kill," flat position.
A glove user's break-in method should be done in a highly sure method. Experts warn against the use of ovens and microwaves.
To make sure that the gloves will be returned and perhaps as part of personal touch putting on it the owner's name along with the phone number is a common practice. However, placing these pieces of information should be done on the inside part of the gloves and definitely not in the web or pocket. Also, gloves that are colored black may need a gold or silver permanent ink for distinction.
Youth players should select "youth gloves." In the same manner, fastpitch players should own "fastpitch gloves." It is not wise to purchase an adult glove that you can grow into.
Give consideration to your position in the baseball game when you decide on the size of your size. The best leather is specially designed for certain positions in the game. Therefore, simply buying a big glove won't help. Also make sure to have another glove to serve as a back up.
While saving up means scouting through bargain buys, never settle for whatever is cheap, unless quality of the product is assured. Focus on getting leather of the best quality. Never settle for low-end bats, gloves and balls just because they are inexpensive. No matter the price, it always pays to grab the best kind when it comes to gloves. Sports enthusiasts have learned to be patient when saving up for the best gloves.
In the long run, gloves of top quality will prove to be better deals because they will serve their purpose better and last much longer.
