The Importance Of The Right Ladders For DIY Projects
Benedict Yossarian
With the veritable boom and bust cycle of the do it yourself industries, people can expect just about anything from the new television shows about DIY. For example, BBC is featuring a new DIY show, the Big Strong Boys.
Ladders, ladders
No matter how tall you might think you are, ladders would always be important for DIY undertakings. If you are into home improvement, the importance of good ladders doubles.
Getting around with small carts with wheel is one thing, but what if you have to install a new light bulb? What if you have to paint the hard to reach corners of your ceiling?
Getting a stepladder may be one of the best investments you can make for your DIY exploits.
According to Barbara Kavovit, or Barbara K. the DIY Diva of UK television:
"Don't skimp on a ladder. Buy the very best one you can afford, and use it only according to the manufacturer's instructions."
Choosing the best
What kind of ladder would be the best choice for most DIY projects? Barbara K. emphasizes:
“When buying a stepladder, opt for a lightweight aluminum one with a small platform and a handrail at the top, which enables you to hang on when working on the top rungs.”
“Even if you're only up it for a second, the stepladder should always be opened fully, so it locks in place, and shouldn't wobble when you're on it. If it does, the stepladder may be at fault but it's more likely to be the floor - see if it's uneven by putting the stepladder in different places.”
The power of two
For other jobs, such as installing electrical wires across a wide space and past many rooms, two stepladders would be best. This eliminates the need to move the ladder around the house.
Moving the ladder around in itself is potentially injurious and harmful to the surrounding area. You can knock down furniture, vases and people with a large aluminum ladder. Lightweight as it is, it can still cause pain.
Discomfort?
In instances that you are not comfortable working alone at an elevated height with a ladder, have someone support the ladder for you. Usually, just holding the ladder firmly would eliminate the unnerving vibrations.
Another thing you have to remember is to never lean the ladder against any unstable surface. This includes your gutter. Believe it or not, the gutter can cause accidents.
The gutter is basically unstable, since it is a large body of metal installed on concrete or wood. It was designed as a pathway for water, and was not meant to support any other form of stress.
Also, avoid as much as possible leaning too far to reach something. If you have to lean sideways to reach something that means your ladder is not in the right position. Tiresome as it is, move your ladder and go up the rungs once again to be on the safe side.
