The number one sanitizer that most pool owners use is Chlorine. True that it is the most effective means of sanitation, however, it poses greater risks and hazards to swimmers, especially when used improperly. Anyone who is in-charge of chlorinating the pool should be careful enough when putting them in the water.

Since there are people eager to escape its possible hazardous effects, alternatives to sanitizing were made. The following are some of the non-chlorine methods that are equally effective and less hazardous than the use of chlorine:

Ozone Generators- This generates ozone gas and it sanitizes through the process of oxidation. The oxygen gas reacts with the microorganisms in the pool. They say this does not purely eliminate the use of chlorine because it will still require a small amount of it to be very effective.

Copper and Silver Ionization- This is similar to the process of purifying drinking water. Ionization is made possible through electrolysis (with the use of both positive and negative charges). The concept in here is to use sanitizing ions. Still you will use a small amount of chlorine to make it work. However, it is small enough that it can guarantee safer water for swimming and less extreme environment that could harm your pool finishes.

Biguanide- This is one option that totally eliminates the use of chlorine. It is an effective sanitizer when used with hydrogen peroxide. However, to fight algae you will need a separate solution for it.

Bromine- This is another alternative for sanitizing pools and is very good for people who have sensitive skins. The good thing about it is that the treatment process is not as long as you do in chlorines. Therefore, you can enjoy swimming on the pool as soon as possible.
