Design Styles - Contemporary Style
Angela Stephens
Contemporary style seems to be an elusive ever changing design style. Perhaps because by definition contemporary refers to what is current and happening now. With so many trends how do you find current and up to date without being faddish or short-lived? Setting some basic guidelines is a useful way to get a handle on contemporary style.
Contemporary and modern are words often used to mean the same style, but in fact they are different. I'll explore modern style in a different article, but for now we will focus on contemporary style. Contemporary design incorporates many colors and textures. Though sleek and simple, it is also fresh and comfortable, not cold or stark.
Several styles can be classified as contemporary throwing more confusion into the mix. The unifying elements include clean simple lines and a minimalist attitude to accessories. A sleek urban loft or a family room in a suburban house can both have contemporary design. Depending on how and by whom the room will be used, the translation of the design will differ. For instance, a family of four in suburbia will likely live differently. They might have more “stuff” and be interested in kid or dog friendly materials and finishes. Like most design styles, a lot will vary in contemporary design based on the individual.
Here are a few ideas to help create contemporary style:
-Colors-
Neutral colors create the framework for a contemporary space. Pops of color in accessories, textiles, or perhaps an accent wall bring more color. Usually the palette has warm rich shades of brown, taupe, cream and white. Black is often used to ground the room.
-Furnishings-
To keep the sleek sophisticated feeling, choose furnishings with simple silhouettes and minimal detail. Upholstered pieces should have clean lines and neutral textural fabric. Wood finishes are usually either very light or very dark. Woods that have a less noticeable grain such as maple or birch fit nicely. Other finishes include frosted and clear glass, stainless steel, nickel, and chrome. To help create the feeling of open space, contemporary furniture often has exposed legs.
-Textiles-
Textiles in the form of rugs, pillows, drapes, and throws are an easy way to get that pop of color and textural interest. Natural fabrics that are both textural and neutral are best. Silk, linen, wool, and cotton are popular choices. Geometric prints in a bold color are a perfect accent. If privacy is not an issue, leaving windows unadorned contributes to the clean look. If window treatments are a must, keep them as simple as possible.
-Putting it all together-
Now comes the tricky part, putting it all together. Contemporary design requires a clean uncluttered look, so put away all those knick-knacks! Find great storage pieces to minimize clutter on surfaces. For interest, use a sculptural lighting fixture or table lamp Repeat your color scheme through the space for a cohesive feel. You want your eye to travel easily through the room.
Contemporary design can be a breath of fresh air to your space. It is sophisticated, warm, sleek, and fresh. Order can be restored and clutter conquered.
