Babies Are Delicate
Blake Provo
The definition for Shaken Baby Syndrome or SDS (as defined by the National Center on Shaken Baby Syndrome) is: A term used to describe the constellation of signs and symptoms resulting from violent shaking or shaking and impacting of the head of an infant or small child. The degree of brain damage depends on the amount and duration of the shaking and the forces involved in impact of the head.
Symptoms:
- reduced appetite
- poor sucking or swallowing
- vomiting
- irritability
- tiredness
- convulsions
- blood pooling in eyes
- pupils different sizes
- having a hard time breathing
- no smiling
- bulging or spongy forehead
Long Term Effects: Shaken baby syndrome is very serious. Shaking a baby can result in...
- learning disabilities
- physical disabilities
- ribcage fractures
- seizures
- deafness
- brain damage
- death: one out of four victims die
Consider the things a baby must feel looking to the eyes of a parent whom they love while they are being forcefully shaken. Think of the fear and confusion that the baby would feel. Dont permit your baby to become a victim of shaken baby syndrome. 50% of victims are shaken by their natural parents.
Prevention: The first step in prevention is educating anyone who cares for an infant or child. Remember, NEVER, NEVER, NEVER SHAKE A BABY. If you become upset with your baby, put him/her down and leave the room. When you have completely calmed down, return to the room and care for the baby. Attempt to meet the babys fundamental needs; feed and burp the baby and then check the diaper. If these things don't end the crying, use a few of these techniques:
- wrap the baby in a blanket
- offer a pacifier
- go on a walk with the baby
- get a noisy toy
- take the baby for a walk in the stroller
- ask someone you trust to come babysit for awhile
Choosing to shake a baby is your choice, you are in control. You can prevent shaken baby syndrome. Do not EVER shake a baby. Dont permit a fleeting moment of frustration to result in murder.
