We are all pretty good at playing mind tricks on ourselves aren't we? Many of you have led yourselves to believe that being afraid of changing careers means you shouldn't go ahead and pursue a job change. You probably assumed that if you're that concerned about making a career change happen, that maybe you shouldn't even try and not take any chances.
When did you become so fearful? There are many people who think that once you chose a career you're got to stick with it. They don't think they have the option or abilities to change and do something different. We often tend to sell our abilities short! But as time goes by, the more unhappy and dissatisfied people become with their work. Any time they consider a different field though, they are overcome with fear and figure they are stuck where they are.
Many people feel that they may not like their new career or are not going to make enough money or just fearful that they will fail. Some of us think that we won't even get that new job, so why bother even try? Perhaps you feel that the new job is beneath you and you feel like you are simply "wasting your degree". Do you recognize any of these fears in you?
One of the best methods to get past the career fears is by no longer waiting for your fear to go away before changing employment and instead taking action despite being afraid. It's very normal to be fearful about switching careers. If you weren't, I'd have to make sure that you still have a pulse! You have got to recognize that you are not supposed to supress your fear in order to be able to change careers.
You accept your fear as a part of this career change process. Once you do, you let yourself be afraid but still take the steps needed to get that next job. In hindsight you then see that your fear was unfounded and really not a big deal after all! Let yourself feel the fear and take that first step. I promise, it won't be that bad.
