Blyth In Northumberland
Pennies
The town Blyth is Northumberlands largest town. It has a prime sea front location, with a very long stretch of sandy beach and good fishing, on or off shore. Ideally situated with easy access to the A189/A19/A1 for North & South commuting. Newcastle airport can be reached within a thirty minute drive.
Historically it grow from the export of Northumberlands coal industry. It has a population of thirty one thousand people. There are a variety of up and coming new housing developments at affordable prices.
It is still a busy seaport. The trade involves Aluminium ore, imported coal, premier pulp and paper along with shipments of plywood and timber from Scandinavia, the Baltic, South America and the Far East. The history of the port dates from the year 1723. The pier has nine windmills that generate electricity to the National Grid. The royal Northumberland Yacht Club is situated at the harbour.
It has a regular weekly market on a Tuesday, Friday and Saturday. It has a wide variety of shops including the Keel Row centre. A large free car park exits at the back of the Keel Row Centre.
Other attractions include a Sports Centre, a Theatre and a famous amateur football club Blyth Spartans.
Nightlife in Blyth involves many lively bars, pubs and clubs. Ridley Park was created on land handed over by Viscount Ridley and was opened in July 1904. It has recently undergone a regeneration project which has seen the installation of interactive water features and upgrading of existing childrens play areas. Further redevelopment is planned in future.
The Quayside has undergone major redevelopment in recent years. Once a centre of Blyth? industry where coal would be loaded from trains onto boats for export it is now a clean and peaceful area overlooking the river.
Blyths largest and most natural open space is its beach which stretches from the mouth of the river all the way down to Seaton Sluice.
Prior to their demolition the four chimneys of Blyth Power Station were generally considered to be Blyths greatest and most notable landmark. Two were five hundred and fifty feet high and the other two were four hundred and forty feet high and they were used for navigation by ships and aircraft.
The education system in the town is still split into a three tier system. However, change to a two tier is in the process. Hopefully bring with it higher standards of education all round.
