You may find this hard to believe, but the sport of golf is about more than the ideal golf swing, a premium set of clubs or exquisite putting technique. Since the beginning, golf has always been known as a sport for gentlemen (and ladies), so golf etiquette has always been a significant feature of the sport. Golf etiquette guidelines are usually related to three distinct areas: showing respect for the golf course, displaying courtesy toward other players, and the problem of slow play.

Please Take Care Of The Golf Course

Bunker Play. Chances are you didn't want to be in the sand in the first place. But that's no reason to leave a mess behind once you get out. You should erase any visible signs you've made as much as you can. The golf course should provide a rake so you can do this. If you can't locate a rake, use your club to smooth out any signs of your presence. The golf etiquette goal for the sand should be to leave it like you found it.

Repairing holes in the fairway. When you're taking a shot from the fairway, it's possible for both professionals and new players alike to leave a divot as a result of their practice shot or real shot. Go get the divot, put it back in the damaged spot you made and tread it down with your left foot. Doing this bit of golf etiquette will give the grass a better chance to repair itself.

The Greens. Golf course greens need a lot of extra care. When your ball impacts the green, especially after pitching it from ten or twenty yards away, it's going to make a mark. You can either use a special tool or the tip of your tee to repair the mark. Then use your putter to lightly tap the mark. You might not think this would make much difference, but un-mended ball marks can take as long as 21 days to repair themselves. Those treated in accordance with golf etiquette rules can fix themselves in as little as 12 hours. Other ways to care for the green include taking care not to drag your shoes. Nobody wants to allow for spike marks when making their putt. Golf etiquette also suggests that you be extra careful with the flag. Don't drop or throw the flag; rather, place it gently on the green's surface.

Do Not Forget Courtesy In Golf Etiquette

The essence of courtesy in golf etiquette is distraction. As in, don't be a distraction. It doesn't matter if you're playing with a partner or an opponent, keep away from their line of sight when they're taking their swing. Don't take a position right behind a golfer. You should also avoid crowding, not only for reasons of golf etiquette but for your own safety as well.

Slow Play Is Sometimes A Critical Problem

Nobody really looks forward to rushing through a round of golf. Golf is a sport that's meant to be savored, and there should be ample opportunity for joking with teammates, personal reflection and appreciation of nature. At the same time, if you're golfing at a peak time and the course is jampacked, you should be considerate of the players behind you. Proper golf etiquette includes not holding up the players behind you.

Try to think ahead while your partner is hitting. Instead of critiquing your partner's performance or standing around in a daze, plan your next shot. After you tee off, go straight to your golf ball instead of taking the detour to other players' balls at first. (This assumes you're walking the course and not sharing a golf cart.) Once you get to the green, take out your putter and place your golf bag on the way to the next tee. This will help you make a quicker exit from the green and not delay players waiting on the fairway behind you.

Have you ever played in front of faster golfers? There's no point in trying to finish the game feeling rushed and stressed. Step aside and politely wave the faster players through. This is especially true if you need to find your golf ball in the rough. Think of how much you would appreciate it if they were waving you through.

Golf etiquette doesn't just exist to define golf as a sport for gentlemen only. Golf etiquette has evolved to make the sport of golf a relaxing experience for all players and to keep the golf course in the most playable condition possible. So if you're not willing to follow the rules of golf etiquette for the sake of other golfers, do it for your future enjoyment.
