Diet is, scientists say, part of a good acne fighting regime. But as myths go, it is said that foods like pizza can cause acne. But in many studies, there just hasn't been any proof. It is long believed that a good diet can help influence acne- but certainly not enough to cause major breakouts in most cases.
Interestingly enough, other comfort foods such as chocolate or fried food has also been associated with acne. Studies show that this, too, could not be proven. It has been said that greasy foods often leave greasy residue on one's hands- and then the residue can travel to one's face simply by laying one's palm on their cheek. This can clog pores and lead to breakouts in some cases.
Even with the above knowledge in hand, it is important to know that dirty skin doesn't necessarily cause acne. There have been connections to poorly exfoliated skin and acne, but a "dirty" face doesn't necessarily cause a breakout. Instead, it has much more to do with the mechanics of your skin's shedding and sweat- as well as pores and other factors.
Popular Myths To Improve Acne
There are three main myths in circulation today in regards to obtaining a healthier looking face. It is commonly said that prescription drugs, ivory soap, and tanning can help in fighting acne- but whether or not these hold true remains to be seen.
First off we have sun exposure. Sun exposure puts important vitamins into the skin, and also seeks to kill germs on the face. In short term effects, it may seem like sun exposure can indeed help cover up acne or even prevent it. But in the long run, it can help keep blemishes and scars visible for long periods of time- and you also run the risk of skin cancer through vast exposure.
The use of harsh soaps has been associated with improving acne. But harsh soaps can easily irritate skin- and for some skin types, it can make breakouts exponentially worse. In that case, it is best to stay away from ivory soap or other harsh soaps that will do more harm than good.
Last but not least, we have the prescription drug myth. As the saying goes, prescription drugs can cure anyone of acne. This is completely untrue, of course, as not every drug works for everyone. Some harsh forms of acne fighting drugs do indeed work- but can easily cause life-threatening problems. In that case, it is often better to find alternatives to the acne problem.
