Some think that a niche marketing strategy is to focus on less competitive less searched keywords for search engine optimization. But less competitive and less searched mostly means less profitable! But besides that can concentrating on less competitive keywords be a strategy?
Looking for low hanging - low competetive keywords is a tool - a tactic on your way to success - but sure no strategy.
what the heck is niche marketing?
Niche marketing is to decide to which audience you talk - you segment the target audience and find a still profitable segment and focus on that.
For example you are an marketing freak. And you want to open up your own internet marketing consulting service.
Your first step should be to ask yourself:
Who can be my customer?
So at first sight - everyone who is interested in earning money on the net is your audience.
This is sure no big help for you when you try to write your first salesletter for your service - as this is not a well defined niche - you would try to be everything for everyone.
You should take a spreadsheet and segment this audience - important step is to think of real people - real grops of people.
Example:
People who want to use internet marketing for starting their home business, or people who already started with internet marketing but had no success,...
That gives you a good starting but you should even segment this list a bit more:
Now use the groups you already have and find segments in this group:
Like consultants who have not used internet in their marketing till now - or even more targeted - tax consultants who have no clue how to use the internet in their marketing.
Now segment the group you have found "horizontally"...
Now find the problems they people in this targeted fields have. Brainstorm a bit and add them to your excel spreadsheet.
For example - a person who works in a 8 hour day job and wants to start his online business - this person will want to know how to start it in the space time he has.
The laywer may want to use the net to drive a bunch of targeted presold clients to his company.
As a result of this work you get a matrix in your spreadsheet of possible customers and their problems.
So what to do with all this?
Now you can decide which of the targeted audience to take and which product you sell to them - as you have a very clear picture.
And best of all you will see that there are many people out there who have similar needs and can use same product with just tiny changes.
