Toy collection is a hobby, something that people do on their free time or something that will help them relax and take their mind off the more pressing issues in their lives. Some want to relive their childhood memories while some want to continue what they have been doing since they were kids. Others actually start by buying for their kids only to find themselves more engaged in the activity than their children.

Toy collectors may or may not agree to this but collecting toys is an investment. In fact, some collectors begin just by cleaning the attic or the basement and finding dust-covered toys which, initially, for them holds no value. But then hard to find and old toys now sell for a price. Knowing this has motivated many to collect toys.

If you are now interested enough to begin collecting toys, how do you start? You cannot begin to collect toys hoping only to earn from them. Otherwise, you'll soon grow tired of this activity. Primarily, toys, as with any other collection, should be enjoyed. Even if you do not intend to play with them, you should relish the idea of your toy collection growing. So collect only toys that have appeal to you. Remember that you may not sell many of your toys. For many years they're going to sit inside the glass case for you, your children, your friends and your guests to delight in.

Limit your selection to just one or two toy lines. The numbers are not restrictive, however. You can have more than two toy lines but it is important that you have focus. Having too many interests wastes both your time and your money. Unless you’re awfully rich you will have limited finances for your collection. Having focus allows you to devote your resources to a specific group of toys and you end up having more toys in every toy line. This is much preferable to having so many toy lines and yet only a limited number of toys per toy line. In fact, most collectors are limited only to race cars, beetles, or action movie figures.

Toy collection is progressive. You always start small until you've decided which toys you want to collect. Your local toy store should be the best place to start. But the toys there are so common and new. Unless your toy collection is labeled Very Rare and Old Toys, it should consist of both easy and hard to find items, of both new and old pieces. If you think you have purchased every toy you're interested in from conventional toy stores, it’s time to move to other sources.

Before the advent of the Internet, toy collectors would frequent flea markets, garage sales, or thrift shops to expand their collection. Luckily, it is now easier to find toys in the Internet. Searching for a specific toy will most likely lead you to an auction site where you can bid for it, or to individuals who are selling it from their own collection. It is also worthwhile to join toy forums where toy collectors share ideas and experiences. Most likely this is where you’re going to find valuable advice on how to be successful in your chosen hobby. The best thing is, these people can point you in the direction of the toys you’ve been dying to have.

Before making many purchases, however, do your research. You also need to do this when you're bidding for a specific toy. You should be aware of the toy's current market value to avoid getting ripped off. Local toy dealers and toy catalogs are also good sources of information regarding prices.

If you have not been collecting toys before and would like to start, remember that it will have certain effects on your finances. You may choose to spend more or learn to prioritize. If before you were spending extravagantly, you may consider being more frugal so you can allocate more of your earnings to toys. It would even be sensible to allocate a portion of your salary each month to buying toys. Make sure, however, that not of all your savings goes to your collection - - - and avoid overspending. If you have gone over this month's budget, you may refrain from buying toys the next month so you can "pay off" your debt.

As with any activity, toy collection should not be an obsession. Be careful that it does not consume most of your time and your money. If you see your resources dwindling and your social life suffering because of toy collection, it’s time to cut yourself from your toys for a while and go back to the real world.
