Getting Down With Lumbago
Abbey Grace Yap
Because of our hardworking, fast-paced lifestyles, a lot of people are complaining about lower back pain. Also called lumbago, almost 85% of the US adult population is affected by it, with 7% of those adults experiencing low back pain at any given time of the day. It is most common in adults between the ages 30 to 50, lumbago being the most prominent reason for work loss and disability among that age group.
What is lumbago?
Low back pain is one of the most common musculoskeletal disorder that affects the lumbar area of the spine. The pain can range from mild to severe, and can be acute or chronic. It usually manifests on people whose work involve physical effort.
What causes lower back pain?
There are a lot of possible causes for lumbago, but here are some of the most common:
Injuries. Injuries and trauma directed to the lower back can cause lumbago.
Poor posture. If the body stays in an improper position for a long time, the muscles supporting the spine starts feeling strain and tension, causing lower back pain.
Degenerative disc disease. This is the normal degeneration of the intervertebral discs of the spine that can cause moderate to severe pain and discomfort.
Osteoporosis. This condition causes the bones to turn brittle, making them sensitive and easy to break.
Osteoarthritis. The spine is considered a joint, so it can also fall victim to osteoarthritis which can be really discomforting and painful.
Scoliosis. This condition deforms the natural spine curvature and is very painful.
What are the symptoms of having lumbago?
Pain across the lower region of the back that may sometimes radiate into the buttocks, the back of the thigh or to the groin. The pain usually worsens if the sufferer tries to move.
Limited movement of the spine - especially when bending forward and leaning back.
Tense spasm of the muscles surrounding the spine that causes a stiff back.
A noticeable change in posture. With severe pain and spasm, the back may tilt to one side.
Pins and needles. The pain is sometimes accompanied by a tingling sensation or numbness in the back or buttocks or leg.
What treatments can give lower back pain relief?
Pain relief medications. You can use over-the-counter or prescription pain killers to relieve the lumbago pain.
Muscle relaxants. This can help ease up tense muscles that could be causing the lower back pain.
Stretching. Keeping the muscles flexible and active can help keep in from tensing up and causing lower back pain. It can also help relax tensed muscles.
Correct body posture. Sleep on a flat, firm surface to regain proper spine alignment and avoid stooping, bending, lifting, and sitting on low chairs.
Hot and cold packs. Hot packs aid increases blood flow and circulation, while cold packs help reduce swelling and relieve pain.
Having lower back pain can be really difficult. So always keep in mind that it is important to keep your spine in tip top shape. With adequate exercise coupled with enough rest and proper diet, you're well on your way to having a lumbago-free life.
