Business Impact On Environment
Dustin Cannon
The onset and growth of home based business has affected much more than those entrepreneurs who are enjoying their work at home environment. Industries have grown up around home based business products and services and long time industries have changed their formats to embrace these ever-increasing home based entrepreneurs.
Southwest Airlines, for example, an innovative leader in the airline industry, whose low-cost fares made flight travel possible for another 70 percent of the U.S. population, has changed its product strategies and realigned its staffing in response to the prevalence of home based business travelers, so many of whom now schedule, and print out boarding passes online. 70 percent of Southwest travelers, business and pleasure, schedule online. 60 percent of them print out their boarding passes there. Home based business owners have spurred innovations in the airline industry as a whole, as more and more airports offer wireless fidelity (WiFi) services for these road warriors, at no charge more often than not. Airport construction designs now include numerous electric outlets and business rooms and services for those who have to take their business on the road.
Another industry that actually exists as a result of home based business persons is the executive suite model. These firms offer offices, meeting rooms, videoconferencing and other services for those who are traveling on business and need a place to work or meet clients, and those who have a home based business and need a more formal business look for client or prospect meetings, telephone reception and secretarial services and so forth. A home based business owner, can, for example, rent an office or meeting room, with or without phone, Web connection, fax, copier, video conference capability, catering and so forth, by the hour, the day, the week or the month. These services are typically sold a la carte, and can include a receptionist, a telephone answering service, postal service and free parking.
One of the most prominent of these firms has a global presence, with 750 executive suite locations in 350 cities of 60 countries. In addition to major countries such as the United States, Canada and the UK, a business traveler can work from one of three executive suites in Chile, five locations in Hong Kong, one in Luxembourg, 28 locations in France, 21 properties in Mexico, three in Norway, five in Poland, 24 in Germany, and one in Greece, to name a few.
In Tokyo, for example, a home based business entrepreneur could rent an office in a tower that includes a concert hall, four star hotel, restaurants, retail shops and upscale apartments. Renters have 24 hour access to conduct their business when away from their home base. The rental includes phone and voice mail, free and secure underground parking, meeting rooms, high speed Internet access, and a business lounge. Rates start as low as $ 254 US for a virtual office, mailing services start at a little over $100.
