Memorization Tips For All Home Schooling Subjects
Kris Koonar
Home schooling gives the parent the opportunity to interact with the child extensively. The concept revolves around educating the child at home. This enables the child to learn at a pace that he or she is comfortable with. The home environment, flexible timings and monitoring of the parent are all factors that benefit many children, rather than the system followed at the traditional schools. However, when you take the decision to home school your child, you have to also look into the methods that work best for the child.
Not all children have the same aptitude and power to grasp what is taught to them. When you consider memorization, it is very important to understand the mental strength of the child. Here are some memorization tips for all subjects that a child would need to learn, while homeschooling.
Instead of getting all worked up about why one child is able to memorize and the other is not, it is better to look at the memorization tips for all subjects designed by experts in this field. The tips and methodologies that could be adopted are the work of veteran teachers and authors of books on memory strategies. A little research could be very enlightening and empowering, with great tips to improve memory only a click away. Mnemonics or the little sayings help memory to work well with all homeschooling kids.
Audiovisuals go a long way to remember and re-apply a concept, especially in math and science. Some children learn better with flash cards and rhymes. You need to identify the technique that the child is most comfortable with and then go on to explain a lesson, concept etc. This way, the fun-and-learn technique helps the child to take an interest in the subject and look forward to the lessons. You could also help the child to develop his or her own lesson. Many children remember the lesson better this way.
Memorization tips for all subjects while home schooling your child also includes the acrostic approach. In this method, the child is helped to remember a series of related concepts or words with the help to use the first letter of each word to frame a sentence. For example: Please Excuse My Darling Aunt Suzan- the first alphabets of each of the words stand for the mathematical order- parentheses, exponents, multiplication, division, addition, subtraction. Or HOMES, which are the names of the Great Lakes - Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie, and Superior.
You need to first identify which concept the child has most fun with. The method would require you to indulge in a little homework after the home schooling hours, but the effort will pay off in the long run. You could also help the child to connect with keywords. This method ideally involves a two-step process. The child should be given ample of time to come up with a word that connects or reminds him or her of the concept you are trying to impart.
Another good technique of effectively memorizing long lists like the classification of plants, involves to establish a connectivity to some object in the peripheral and then attach or connect 'the'. For example, if the child is learning the first ten states of the United States, the child could connect with the desk for Delaware and the pencil for Pennsylvania, and so on. These memorization tips for all home schooling subjects helps a lot. The child learns quickly and you are a happy teacher. In addition, the child is able to reproduce the taught matter, whenever needed, without much difficulty.
