Why You Should Take Male Infertility Seriously
Dean Caporella
Male infertility has affected many couples in fact, research over the past four decades shows infertile men contribute to nearly one third of infertility issues reported. That's why it's important that both the male and female undergo tests during the initial screening.
Cause Of Male Infertility
There are any number of causes which could cause a man to experience infertility issues. Studies suggest in up to two thirds of cases, a reason may not be determined however, the incidence of varicocele is one of the more common causes of male infertility.
Varicocele
Varicocele is described as a group of veins that become enlarged in the spermatic cord. About one in five men with infertility issues could be affected by varicocele and it is mostly prevalent in men under 30 years of age. In men who have already fathered children, varicocele can develop at a later age.
Other Causes Of Male Infertility
- Low sperm count is an issue facing many men with fertility issues. There are any number of factors which can contribute to a low sperm count including stress. Whether it be emotional or physical, stress is a serious factor. As an example, emotional stress can interfere with the production of Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) and can result in low sperm count.
- Testicular overheating can affect sperm development. For example, a man can experience testicular overheating by simply sitting in a hot tub or sauna or wearing tight fitting clothing such as underwear. In most cases, this is temporary however, the timing of sex following overheating is important. Because sperm production is slowed, if a couple are trying to conceive, then this will have a resultant effect on the final outcome.
- Sexual issues should be considered. Issues such as relationship problems caused by any number of reasons could have an adverse affect on a man's ability to produce quality sperm.
- Dietary intake is another consideration. Poor diet without sufficient nutritional value or chemically enhanced foods can be a factor in low sperm count and a cause of male infertility.
- Use of drugs or smoking will adversely affect sperm production while excessive alcohol intake will not only lower sperm count but also puts at risk developing sperm.
Other issues such as sexually transmitted disease, environmental influences and strenuous exercise can impact sperm production. The actual cause of male infertility could be a combination of any one of the factors described in this article. Patience will be required by both the man and his partner as in cases where the cause has been established, it can usually be overcome.
