Are They Just Any Toy?
Rachel Nunez
You enter a toy store and what do you suppose you will see? Vast and vast of toys of course.
Parents are naturally the first educators of their children, so when shopping for a toy, they put a great deal of thought into whether their children can learn from it or not before actually buying it. Any parent would want to buy toys that will not only serve as entertainment and something to fondle with, but toys that can help their children develop their physical or mental skills as well.
We all know that a toy store can be overwhelming with the volume of toys to choose from. So how do you spot the educational toys from the regular ones? That will be very tricky, as one could argue that an educational toy is in fact any toy. Any toy in play, after all, has the power to exercise the mind and body and therefore can be considered as enlightening and educating.
But though it is true that all toys challenge ingenuity, educational toys are not just any toy. Yes, the meaning of educational is indeed very fluid. But educational toys are actually aids, specifically designed to help in the development of children's skills, which of course will eventually play a vital part of their lives as they grow up.
These toys, again unlike any toys, are more meticulously focused in the development associated with interacting with it, that the learning experience that comes with it is not accidental. They provide entertainment but more importantly, it fulfills an educational role. They are not just objects used in play. Though they may appear on the surface as simple amusement, their function is to profoundly influence and aid many aspects of children's development. They are intended to support the needs of the children to enhance their physical, social, intellectual and emotional growth.
Yes, the difference of educational toys from regular ones is also very subjective and it really does depend on the parents' perception of the toy's value. So as you pick up the next toy from the store, ask yourselves if it can stimulate your children's mind. Can it help your children develop a particular skill? Can it teach them with a specific subject? Ask yourselves if it serves the purpose of imparting learning to your children. If the answer to these questions is yes, then you will know that the toy you are purchasing is educational.
Because of demands, a lot of toys are already being manufactured with the child's education and development in mind, so do not worry that there are not enough choices. You would d be surprised that there are, in fact, a lot!
But remember that sophisticated toys are not always educational and educational should not also mean expensive. Sometimes the simple ones are the more reliable learning tools. There are traditional toys like building blocks, board games, clays and puzzles, which are abet to help children with their understanding of spatial relationships. These types of toys are good foundation for children to comprehend basic principles of science, develop their problem solving skills, and provide them better grasp of logic.
But whatever you decide to buy, I guess the last and most significant thing to remember is that the educational value derived by the children increases when the toy is appropriate to their age.
