All it takes to clean skirting boards is good, old-fashioned scrubbing with soap and warm water. Just mix the detergent in warm water and then soak your cleaning rags in the solution. Wring the rag to get the excess water out, and then wipe the rag all over the boards.

Once you have gotten the dirt off your boards, rinse the soap off them. The process of rinsing the boards is just the same, except that you would only need a fresh rag and warm water. You do not have to add soap to the solution.

Make sure that you pay attention to the moulding of the profile of the skirting boards. Those mouldings and carvings collect the dirt just as easily, and so you must try to wipe the dirt off them thoroughly, or else you would end up botching the cleaning job.

Naturally, this process can literally be back-breaking. You would have to be bent over or crawling about the house on your hands and knees in scrubbing your boards. If you do not care much for that, you can substitute a sponge mop for your rags. Even disposable toilet wands will do wonders in cleaning your boards.

Dealing with Hard Dirt

There are times when the dirt you have to deal with on your boards is far too stubborn to be wiped off with a simple soap-and-water solution. If the dirt and stain are of the variety that is hard to remove, then you would need a stronger cleaning agent to get the dirt and the scuff from your boards.

One solution that is known to work is vinegar mixed in warm water. After you have initially soaped your boards, go make this mixture and apply it to the more difficult spots. The boards will be clean in no time. If you do not like the smell of vinegar, you can use bleach or any polish used for wood.
