The Skin Aging Process Explained
Joy Healey
Ever since beauty products became available, the consumer would relentlessly pursue these, to satisfy their inexorable craving to retain their youthful complexion. The expense of maintaining this was of little concern. Even in today's modern world, nothing has changed in that respect. Different methods of applying beauty products to retain that "youthful complexion," are in abundance.
The instantly recognizable factor of aging, is determined by the condition of one's skin. People will do anything to delay the signs of this natural process, spending huge amounts of money annually on beauty products and services.
Research how and why skin ages; don't be misinformed - better understanding helps you appreciate the true potential of a product to make your skin look, and feel, younger.
Knowing how skin changes as we grow older is a wise move. Only when you understanding the hows and whys of aging skin, can you develop the correct habits and source the best treatments necessary to retain youthful looks for as long as possible.
To start with, the skin will age by two processes. Genes together with the condition of your body determine the intrinsic, or internal, aging process; Sunlight and lifestyle also contribute to the negative effects outside of the body, referred to as extrinsic aging.
The effect of aging is perfectly natural, and is determined by our genes. From the age of approximately 25 years, the skin will show signs of deterioration.
The skin will lose its natural ability of elasticity as we mature in life. That is because skin cells do not regenerate as fast as they used to - resulting in tougher, older skin. Although internal aging begins in our 20s, the typical signs of wrinkles and sagging skin do not appear for about a couple of decades more.
Other factors which produce adverse skin effects are the loss of proper body cooling, achieved by sweat production, thinning, dryness and loss of firmness.
Extrinsic (external) aging factors are those outside one's own genes that accelerate skin aging. Early adverse effects on the skin are determined by your lifestyle.
The effects of harmful UV rays from the sun should be seriously considered. One must always be aware of the harmful effect the UV rays of the sun have on the skin. Coupled with the effects of global warming, the natural ability of the skin to repair itself is adversely affected. It does not take much to damage your skin; even a short period of regular exposure to the harmful UV rays of the sun is enough to promote rough skin, freckles and age spots. An even graver symptom would be the onset of skin cancer.
Collagen is reduced by the harmful effect of the exposure to the rays of the sun; experts refer to this as "photo aging". For good shape, elasticity, and young appearance, the skin tissues must be regularly supplied with the protein collagen. As we mature in life, so our collagen quite naturally diminishes.
The level of skin pigmentation, as well as harmful exposure to the sun, determine your vulnerability to "photo aging". Given these factors, fair-skinned individuals and those who spend long periods under the sun stand to have more pronounced effects of photo aging compared to those who are darker-skinned and spend more time in the shade.
Facial exercises have sometimes been fashionable. Ironically, the routine once prescribed to prevent facial wrinkles is actually one of the causes of that very thing one aims to avoid. Avoid facial exercises, as these actually cause the muscles on the face to react and produce wrinkles. Once the elasticity of your skin disappears, any lines or wrinkles present become more difficult to reduce, and are more likely to persist.
The harmful effects of cigarette smoking, are external, as well as internal. The clearest signs are judged by the appearance of the skin. Smokers suffer faster break up of skin cells, and other harmful effects, with the absorption of nicotine into the body system.
In comparison, someone who has smoked for several years will look noticeably older than a person who has never smoked. Additionally the skin of smokers has noticeably deteriorated by appearing to be yellow in color. Stopping smoking, will produce noticeable improvement in the quality of the skin within quite a short time. The actual amount of time will vary from person to person, depending on the level of damage that has occurred.
Obviously it's vital to be careful what you eat. Healthy eating and maintaining hydration, is just the beginning. This is covered more fully elsewhere.
To gain a better understanding of the aging process, we have accept it as a natural transition which the body makes, rather than some unavoidable problem. No matter what steps are taken to reduce it, at some point in one's life, the effect of aging will become apparent, and may be particularly obvious on your skin. The outward signs can be delayed by treating with many different treatments or products, some better than others.
