Taking Care Of Accidents For Newbies
Sam Mckenzy
Cars have become a part of our lives here in the states. Along with cars becoming part of our lives, accidents have become part of our lives as well. People usually see at least one accident on the way to work each week, or at least I have. It's all around us and we know how to take care of ourselves when it happens; all except for the person who never got into a car accident. They should know that there are other measures than insurance to take care of accidents.
The big insurance companies take pretty good care of you when you get into a huge accident, and you should definitely report your accident to the police, DMV, and your insurance company for certain. They are there to help you through the catastrophic accidents. But when you get into a small accident, for instance, someone scratching your car with a shopping cart, I would say not to report it but take care of it amongst the two parties. It is like an unwritten rule. To report it, it would be a waste of time for both parties and more work for the police, DMV, and the insurance company.
By reporting the minor accident, both parties not only waste time and money, they add a dent in their records to fix a dent on their car. By reporting the accident, the insurance companies will file a record of involvement in an accident on not only on the wrong doer, but on both parties, thus increasing the insurance cost for both parties. And the accident will get reported to the DMV, which also adds a record of involvement in an accident for both parties. Yes you can receive compensations for the accident from the insurance company, but is it worth it? Both of your insurance costs will go up each month, and eventually, you will regret reporting the accident even though you are the victim of the accident.
Let's have some heart and a common sense here. It is the right thing to report an accident, but the minor ones should be taken care of by the two parties. It's an unwritten rule for drivers. You should exchange numbers or contact info from his or her driver's license, cell phone number would be better because you can make sure the contact info is correct. Afterwards, you can either go to the body shop and get an estimate and work things out from there, such as the wrongdoer paying for the full price or some compensation. But in the end, if you feel uncomfortable, you can still talk to your insurance company if you'd like. Make sure to have a small agreement signed. Unless the either of the party involved in the accident are a jerk, you should use common sense and take care of it the accident without putting a dent in your records.
Using a little bit of common sense, admitting the mistake, and having a little heart will make you and the other party's life easier.
