Cryonics - An Alternative To Death
David C Skul
Cryonics is intended to save the lives of the people with severe
diseases, by freezing them, after their death, at temperatures that are so
low that even the decaying of the body is stopped. The purpose of this is
to wait until technology and medicine evolves to the point that cures
for these diseases are found, and then to thaw the frozen bodies, revive
and cure them.
An important thing is to understand what is referred to as death -
absolute death is considered to have occurred when the information in the
brain is destroyed. For us, the patients may be dead, but for the future
scientists they probably won't be, just like the people who drowned in
the past - they were considered dead, but now they can be revived even
after a few hours sometimes...
It would be better to perform cryonics on people who are still alive,
before clinical death and the damage that it brings when it occurs, but
the law currently doesn't allow this.
The problem today is that we can freeze people with cryonics, but we
don't poses the techniques of bringing them to life yet. However, it is
esentially believed that revival is possible, because some experiments
on animals have been successful. Research in this domain of cryonics is
being conducted and techniques will certainly be developed.
There already are companies which offer cryonics services, freezing
their patients with the help of liquid nitrogen. The prices are not that
high as you may believe, but they are elevated - around 150 000 $. A
cheaper option would be to freeze your head only - people will most likely
have methods of generating a new body from your DNA in the future. A
simple search on the Internet and you'll find a list of cryonics
companies and offers.
So, if anything else fails, the best option for you is to appeal to
cryonics, in the hope for a better future.
