It's traditionally an industrial city, which is well-known for producing steel. The city's steel manufacturing heritage was shown in a 1997 british film, The Full Monty.



By the 14th century, Sheffield was already renowned for the manufacturing of knives, & by 1600 it was at the centre of cutlery production in britain. These industries led to the speedy growth of sheffield, which saw the town being made a borough in 1843 & being given city status in 1893.

Sheffield remaind a significant industrial city throughout the first half of the 20th century, however worldwide competition led to the closure of various steelworks from the start of the seventies.
