Vitamins And Minerals Functions

As we mentioned in previous articles we know that American diet is high in saturated fat, trans fat, and other harmful substances such as sugar, caffeine, pesticides, additive substances, and less in fruits and vegetables. These types of harmful substances is toxic. Our body's detoxifying functions try to get rid of them everyday, when they fail it causes disruption of hormone production, damaging our body's detoxification organs and weakens our immune system resulting in hormone imbalance and many chronic illness consequently. In this article, we will discuss how to detoxify your body with vitamins and minerals.



1. Vitamins C and A

Vitamin C is an antioxidant and also has a mighty function in increasing absorption of nutrient intake. Without enough vitamin C, food entering our stomach will either be wasted or little will be digested through the cells of the intestine. Be sure to add vitamin C your food intake together with vitamin A. It also promotes strong immune system, dissolves heavy metal that accumulated in our body, as well as prevent the loss of eyesight in elders. Remember, overdose of vitamin C causes diarrhea and vitamin A is toxic causing jaundice.

2. Be sure to have a balance of magnesium and calcium

Mineral deficiency causes our body to pick up other forms of toxic minerals to compensate for these deficiencies weakening our body tissue, blood and bones. Unbalanced or deficiency of magnesium and calcium decreases the function of our heart as well as increase the risk of calcium sticking on the arterial wall and arthritis.

3. Vitamin E

Besides helping to promote the production of sperm and testosterone in men, vitamin E in the form of tocopherone and d-alpha tocopherol reduces the accumulation of heavy metals in the brain, increasing the physical and mental sharpness, and other activities as well as decreasing the risk of muscular degeneration.

4. Zinc

Zinc is a critical mineral for prostate gland in men, deficiency of zinc not only increases the risk of enlarged prostate and prostate cancer. It also is a vital mineral in the forming of stomach acid, decreasing the chance of malabsorption syndrome.

5. Iron

Deficiency of iron not causes anemia but also decrease the production of red blood cells resulting of the depletion of oxygen circulated in the bloodstream, weakening the immune system and increasing the risk of inflammation and chronic diseases.

6. Vitamin K

Vitamin K can be found abundant in broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, kale, kohlrabi, and brussels sprouts. It is an essential vitamin needed to underline skin membrane. Without vitamin K our skin becomes less elastic, becomes dry and increases the risk of forming skin free radicals, wrinkles and skin diseases.

Do you have any idea if you are getting what you need even though you hear a lot about vitamins and minerals? For the most part, you probably are. There are times when we don't however, and this lead to a very interesting theory. My mom gave me a book she had read a while back, and it claimed that people who do not get enough vitamins and minerals each day might get sick easier and also might walk around with abnormal cravings.

I read the book and it got me thinking about a teacher I had in seventh grade. This guy was your classic teacher, even if he was not very animated. Many times he would eat the chalk he had in the classroom. Though we thought it was funny at the time, I never thought there was a reason why he did it. May be it had something to do with the amount of vitamins and minerals in his diet? I am not sure, but this book was telling me it was. It's a fascinating theory. Our bodies do crave vitamins and minerals we aren't getting, but would it make us eat chalk?

So this might be the explanation why you crave certain foods. That's certainly not as disgusting as eat chalk, but this could explain odd cravings, especially during pregnancy. Expecting women need more vitamins and minerals than anyone else, and they must to be sure they get them. If they are not getting the vitamins and minerals for themselves as well as what they need for their growing baby, does this drive them to ask for Italian dressing and hotdogs in the middle of the night? I don't know.

honestly don't know if a lack of essential vitamins and minerals might explain cravings, even though the man who wrote the book made some excellent points. What I do believe is that if you are dieting you deal with cravings every day, and maybe making sure your intake of vitamins and minerals is what it should be might just prevent a few of those stupid urges that make you over eat. Even though it's just a theory, maybe if you make sure you take a daily vitamin it might help you to keep a lid on your urges just in case it works. If you take up a diet plan that ensures you get the right foods each day, maybe that, along with the vitamins, might give you the head start you require to stay on track. Just don't eat chalk, ok?
