Making sure you stick to the budget is harder than actually making one up, but if you can manage to stick to it, you're as good as home free. What are some things that you should consider when making a household budget?



Well, the first thing you have to do is figure out where your money is going before you can figure out how to budget it. Keep a detailed record of how much money you spend on everything each month by either keeping receipts or carrying around a small notebook and taking note of your purchases as you make them. If you want, you can also note the time of day.

After you find out where your money is going, try to determine the things that you can do without. These would include items that are purchased on an impulse or things that are purchased as a matter of habit or routine, such as a stop at the coffee shop every day after work.

Visits to the coffee shop (especially certain higher priced establishments) can cost $4 or $5 a day or more, depending on how many drinks you order. Is this really necessary? Probably not. The point is, if it is an unnecessary expense, cut it out.

Something else to consider is learning how to cook in your kitchen instead of eating out. If you learn to make things from scratch, you'll probably save money, since most of the pre-processed and frozen foods that you can get at the grocery store are the most expensive items there.

If you have internet access (and if you're reading this, you probably do), there are dozens of websites that you can go to that will give you recipes for just about anything you can think of and tips on how to get them just right. You do not have to learn to make a souffla to cook a good, healthy dinner.

Saving on gas is probably not as hard as you think, either. There are other ways to save money than just leaving the car parked in the driveway. Unless your car's manual says your engine will malfunction without it, go for the regular unleaded gas instead of premium.

There is no real difference in the performance of either. You should also use the air conditioner less, since it makes the engine work harder, thus consuming more fuel. You might think that speeding to get somewhere faster will help you get somewhere quicker and use less gas, but you would be wrong on this, too. The faster you go, the more gasoline you use.
