Ways To Lower Your Cholesterol

There are two major ways to lower cholesterol. The first option is by undergoing medication. The second option is to lower it naturally. The following is a list of four ways to do it without having to spend too much or stress yourself on side effects or other costs, because staying healthy should not be a problem.



1. Lose Weight

Gaining extra pounds won't help in lowering your cholesterol especially if you are already overweight. Having all the extra fat in your body will disrupt the rate of normal metabolism and will make you unhealthy and unfit.

Shedding those extra pounds can help lower your cholesterol tremendously. You do not have to lose them all in one go. You can do it slow by planning a balanced diet and by exercising. Shedding a half or a pound a week will already be beneficial for you. This is not just one of the ways to lower cholesterol, but it will also reduce the risk of high blood pressure and diabetes.

2. Say Hello to HDLs

Keep in mind though that not all cholesterols are bad. There are HDLs (high-density lipoprotein), or good cholesterol, and LDLs (low-density lipoprotein), or bad cholesterol. Foods rich in LDLs include meat, cheese, butter, and milk. These can raise your cholesterol level. But you can substitute these with healthier alternatives like fruits, vegetables, and nuts, foods that lower cholesterol.

Other sources of HDLs are fish like mackerel, salmon, and tuna. These contain omega-3 fatty acids. In fact, omega-3 fatty acids can lower VLDLs (very low-density lipoproteins) and triglycerides, which is a type of blood fat. Two servings of baked or grilled fish per week are recommended.

Keep in mind though that consuming foods rich in HDL alone will not be enough to lower your cholesterol.

3. Sweeping with Fiber

There is a reason why vegetarians are less prone to high cholesterol levels and heart diseases. Eating fruits and vegetables-fibrous food-are beneficial to health.

Cholesterol is lowered when because soluble fiber can bind bad cholesterol with bile acids in the intestines and flush it out of the body later. Consuming at least 15 grams of it per day can lower your LDL level by 5 to 10 percent. Pectin, a kind of soluble fiber, can also ease overeating by slowing the digestive process. Pectin can be found in apples.

4. Walk It Off

Since not everyone can carry well with strenuous cardio exercises like treadmills, running and even workout, they have the option of doing brisk walking instead. Walking can lower cholesterol, shed weight, and help the heart.

Walking for 30 minutes at least five days a week is already enough to make significant changes on your body.

You can either commit to these ways to lower your cholesterol or you can choose to take medications. Either way, you have to dedicate time and effort to keep yourself fit and healthy. You can even get other people to support you or join you.

Exercise and nutrition are two of the most important steps that you can take to reduce high cholesterol and prevent the risk of developing heart disease. The goal isn't to eradicate cholesterol, but to regulate the levels of cholesterol and keep them in a healthy zone. High cholesterol levels are considered to be as follows. Your total cholesterol level should be no higher than 200 mg. LDL levels should be 130 mg or less and HDL levels should be approximately 60 mg. HDL is good cholesterol and the higher the levels of HDL the lower your chances are of developing heart disease. As with any health care or fitness program, it is important to discuss your cholesterol levels with your health care provider to determine the best course of treatment.

Diet and exercise are the most important lifestyle changes that you will need to address. Other important issues to take into consideration include the amount of alcohol you drink and whether or not you quit smoking. Recent studies have shown that weight training can greatly benefit those who are trying to lower their cholesterol. These finding are significant due to the fact that is has been known for many years that aerobic activity helps reduce cholesterol, but now the current findings suggest that anaerobic activity also increases HDL levels, thereby lowering LDL levels and overall cholesterol.

Planning your exercise routines in advance can help you succeed at reaching your goals. Take the time to determine your exercise routine and keep a journal of your progress. Choosing an exercise routine that you enjoy is key and will help prevent you from becoming bored. Understanding that there are many benefits to exercise, in addition to reshaping, toning, and firming the body can help you remain focused. Exercise benefits the body from the inside out, and is a powerful tool in the fight against high cholesterol.

Some important dietary changes that will help lower your cholesterol include reducing the amount of sugar, carbohydrates, and fat in your diet and increasing the amount of fiber you consume on a daily basis. When adding fiber to the diet, it's important to realize that fiber can cause an increase in stomach gas and bloating. It is best to obtain fiber from natural sources and to slowly add it to the diet. Lowering your cholesterol is one of the most important steps that you can take in the fight against heart disease.

As you can see it is a combination of exercise and diet that will get the job done. You must have the one with the other. Exercise and a good diet are like a married couple, they are meant to go together, but sometimes it seems like they do not get along. Well do your best to combine them in your life. That is where you will see the best results and see your cholesterol lowered.
