Search Engine Optimization or SEO is a term widely used today by many internet marketers. Search engines are where people go first to find what they are looking for online. For example, if you wanted a chicken recipe for dinner, you would probably go to Google and search for "chicken recipe". Now if you happen to have a recipe site, and you optimized your site for chicken recipe you would come up on the top of the list when someone searched for that.



Most people that use search engines use only the ten top search results in the first page. Making it to the first page, more so to the top three is the barometer of a sites success in search engine optimization. You will get a higher ratio of probability in being clicked on when you rank high. The more traffic for your site, the more business you get.

The key is to be able to get your site to come up at the top of the results for the keywords you have chosen, and the keywords people are searching for. It does your site no good to be #1 on Google for purple bear paws, if no one is searching for that term. Getting your site to rank number one for a particular keyword you are targeting is what search engine optimization is all about. You need to do it to get traffic to your site and make money.

With search engine optimization you can get the benefit of generating a high traffic volume. Let's just say you only convert 10% of your traffic to sales. If you only get a hundred hits in a day you have already made one sale. This is very possible using search engine optimization. If you get only ten hits a day using other methods you will only make one sale every 10 days! That's a big difference.

So once again, what is search engine optimization? Search engine optimization is utilizing tools and methods in making your site top ranking in the results of search engines. Getting yourself in the first page and better yet in the top half of the page will ensure that your site will generate public awareness of your site's existence and subsequently generate more traffic, traffic that could lead to potential income and business.

Search engine optimization requires a lot of work to be fully realized. There are many aspects you have to change in your site or add as well to get search engine optimization. These will include getting lots of information about the keyword phrases that are popular in regards to your sites niche or theme.

You may also need to rewrite your sites contents so that you could get the right keyword phrases in your site without making it too commercial but light and informative. There are certain rules and guidelines to be followed with making your site's content applicable and conducive to search engine optimization.

You will also need to collaborate with many other sites so that you could get link exchanges and page transfers. The more inbound and outbound traffics generated by sites among others are one of the components search engines uses to rank sites.

Try to search the internet for many useful help. Tips, guidelines and methods for search engine optimization are plenty to be found. Read many articles that can help you optimize your site in search engine results. The more knowledge and information you gather the better. This will all help you in getting those high rankings. This may require a little time and effort in your part but the benefits will be astounding.

If you can part with some money, there are many sites in the internet that can help you in search engine optimization. There are many sites that help in tracking keyword phrases that can help your site. There are also some content writers that have lots of experience in making good keyword laden content for your sites that have good quality.

Search engine optimization is one of the very best ways you can drive web traffic to your site. Not only do you get traffic, but once you have done the work to get your site to the top of the search engine rankings for your keywords you will get that traffic over and over with minimal continuing work on your part.

While implementing a linking strategy is the top priority of most internet marketers, the fact of the matter is that you need to do everything you can to increase your edge over the competition, and one of those ways is to effectively use on page optimization.

First of all, let's do a little research on the competition and see what they are doing.

If you have a list of keywords that you are targeting to promote your website, grab them and head over to Google. If you don't have a list of keywords or keyphrases, you should sit down and do a little research and see what keywords you should target.

Now, select the keywords that you want to target ? the more specific and niche oriented the better.

Just make sure that people actually search for those keywords.

If you aren't sure how often those keywords searched for, go to the Overture Search Term Suggestion Tool or Wordtracker to find out just how often, and in the case of Wordtracker, just how competitive your keywords are.

Type in your keyword and see what comes up. Then go to the first two or three sites that are listed under that keyword.

Look at how the pages of these sites are optimized and make a few notes.

You want to check:

-how they have used their heading tags

-how often they have repeated the keyword on the page

-if they put keywords in the alt tags of their images (put your mouse overtop of the pictures on their pages and see if anything comes up)

-if they have the keyword in the title of the page

-if they named the page after the keyword (e.g. ? keyword.html)

-if they used the keyword in any of their meta tags. Go to ?View? on your web browser (in Internet Explorer) and down to ?View Source? to see what they have put in their meta tags

-if the keyword is a part of their url

Once you have taken note of the above for the top two or three sites, go back to Google again and type in ?link:[http://www.competitor's-website-address-here.com]?, putting the url of the page you just checked into the ?[http://www.competitor's-website-address-here.com]? section above.

This will bring up a list of the other websites that are currently linking to them.

Now that you have analyzed the top two or three websites listed for that one keyword, you want to imitate what they have done and go a little further.

Get out your list of how each site was optimized, and look to see what each of your competitor's haven't done.

Go through the list provided above and see how you can improve on their current on page optimization strategy.

For example, if they have forgotten to use the keyword in the title of their page, you can do all of the on page optimization that they have done, but go one step further and put your keyword in the page's title.

Or, if they only have a few sites with low Page Rank linking to them, you could make it your goal to get a few more sites linking to you than them, or to get sites that have a higher Page Rank linking to your site.

You want to see what they have done and then optimize a little bit more. This will ensure that you have a successful strategy, as you will be adding to their already proven on page seo strategy.

You want to do this for each keyword that you are going to target. It can be a monumental task, but it will dramatically increase your search engine listings.

Once you have analyzed the competition and have a search engine optimization plan of action, all you need to build your pages.
