The centerpiece of nearly any wedding reception is the cake. With the many colors, shapes and styles for wedding cakes, the variations are endless with an enormous opportunity to be creative. One way to create a ‘WOW' factor from your guests is to choose a wedding cake with a water feature. Wedding cakes with waterfalls can be elegant or whimsical, commemorating a special memory such as a favorite vacation spot or proposal location. Or a waterfall feature can simply be a unique way to highlight your wedding cake at your reception.
Mixing Waterfalls and Cake Sugar
Just as you would want to consider the type of cake you want if your reception is outdoors on a hot August day, you would want to consider your location and desired cake type if you would like a water feature. Wedding cakes with waterfalls can be designed to accommodate nearly any venue with some planning for things such as possible electrical outlets if your waterfall is not battery operated. The type of icing and cake decorations may need to be slightly altered depending on the style of your cake if the design of the waterfall interferes or inhibits any of your desired choices. A skilled cake designer will be able to advise you of any possible issues during the design phase.
Featuring your Waterfall
A waterfall feature can be built right in to the cake using materials such as acrylic tubing. By using the acrylic tubing method, you could potentially have the waterfall running right though the middle of your cake. Depending on how the feature is designed, this method can minimize the amount of water exposed to the cake if it is contained exclusively through the acrylic tubing. It can also increase your creativity opportunity by using colored water to coordinate with your wedding theme.
You can also choose to have your cake tiers surround a more elaborate water feature. This method lends itself to being more whimsical with the opportunity to stack cakes in an unexpected sequence surrounding the waterfall. You can also use this method to feature a more natural waterfall, with water trickling down a bed of rocks. This method may also allow you to keep the waterfall feature in place after the cake has been served.
Additional items can be used to highlight the special features of wedding cakes with waterfalls. By using colored water, special lighting, music or photos of the waterfall you may be trying to replicate, you are truly providing an unexpected, customized wedding cake that your guests will remember.
If you are looking to have a water feature in your wedding cake, you should be sure to discuss your options with your cake designer. Each designer is likely to have their own techniques for creating wedding cakes with waterfalls which may cause you to shop around a little more for a designer that can accommodate your request. Additionally, you should also ensure that the site of your reception is prepared to assist with the specialized set up of your cake and the take down at the end of your event.
Wedding Cakes With Buttercream
Weddings are so much more fun than they used to be, don't you think? They have become less about doing what is traditional and more about allowing the bride and groom to be creative and expressive. In no part of the wedding is this more true than the cake. To make your wedding truly memorable, design a great wedding cake with personality.
When your mother and grandmother were brides, wedding cakes were one color: white. They were also almost always one shape: round. Not only that, but the only acceptable decorations were things like flowers, Swiss dots (especially for brides wearing pearl bridal jewelry), and ribbons. On the top, a prim little bride and groom could be perched, or perhaps a pair of doves or a set of wedding bells. The cake inside was also highly likely to be a basic yellow or white cake. These classic wedding cakes were pretty enough, but they did not allow much opportunity for creative expression.
When it comes to wedding cakes these days, the only rule is that there are no rules! If you are a classic bride wearing your mother's bridal gown and pearl jewelry, you might still want an all white cake, although yours is more likely to have your monogram on top than a plastic bride and groom figurine. And a white exterior does not necessarily mean a standard flavor of cake on the inside. Brides and grooms are choosing all sorts of flavors, from spice cake to red velvet cake to rich dark chocolate.
Most couples will still choose a somewhat traditional form for their wedding cake, consisting of three or five tiers. Round is still the most popular, but square cakes are also very much in favor. Something else that is being seen more often is cakes with tiers that are intentionally stacked to look crooked or wacky, as well as having a different shape for each tier of the cake. And then there are those couples who throw tradition completely out the window, and have a totally custom cake made like a little three dimensional sculpture in their favorite form. This has long been the custom for groom's cakes, but now it is also being done for the main wedding cake as well.
It is great fun to design a wedding cake that either is the perfect expression of your wedding theme or that showcases the interests of the bride and groom (even if it does not tie in with the rest of the wedding). For instance, if you were having a tropical wedding, your cake could feature an underwater scene with a profusion of brightly colored tropical fish swimming in a coral reef, all made from fondant and frosting. Or if you met at college, you could have your wedding cake made in your school colors. Why not take it one step further, and have it play the school fight song?
There is no limit to how creative and expressive a wedding cake can be. Cake designers are able to do the most amazing things with cakes these days, including incorporating sound or moving parts. Of course, you may just end up with a cake that looks too incredible to eat!
