Weight Loss And Muscle

Did you know that you lose between 0.5 and 2% of your muscle mass every year over the age of forty? Thats quite scary, isnt it? Just when you think youve got the measure of life, you start to wither away! Just think what its like when youre 70 +, you will have lost a lot of muscle " maybe up to 60%.



Its difficult to imagine losing this amount of muscle mass, but this what everybody experiences. How we all cope with old age is difficult to imagine.

Theres a further problem. Your vanishing muscle mass reduces the effectiveness of your metabolism. Why? Because muscles are very effective at burning calories. Lose muscle and the consequence is weight gain. Couple increased weight with a low muscle mass and you have a recipe for disaster.

Old age for hundreds of millions of people across the world is blighted by being unable to perform some very basic functions without great difficulty. It leads to great unhappiness and puts an enormous strain on health care services. But it neednt be the case.

Can anything be done? Is it possible to do anything about reversing muscle loss? Until recently it was thought that it was impossible to reverse the effects of age related muscle loss. This is no longer the case. Muscle can be regenerated. A regular program of resistance exercises will help to regenerate muscle.

There is also an added bonus because it has also been found that having healthy muscles helps to strengthen your bones too. Theres another plus. Healthy, well exercised muscles will keep your metabolism functioning properly and youll be able to keep any weight gain in check.

Dont think that this muscle regeneration applies only to old people, it applies to everybody. If you want to keep your metabolism in trim you need to have healthy muscles. This is a fitness for life issue as well as being a means to keep control of your weight.

If you want to have a slim, healthy life, you need to start a regime of resistance exercises as early as possible. If you allow yourself to accumulate weight over time, you will find it much more difficult to get rid of later in life. It would be a very sensible to have permanent weight loss as your goal. To do this you need to make change. This change should include an exercise plan. Exercise needs to become a habit " a slim habit. To lose weight permanently you need to learn new habits. Act now, dont leave it too late.

The reason is a little stress chemical called Cortisol. Cortisol aids the body in recovering from the effects of stressful experiences. Cortisol instructs the liver to release sugar into the blood and triggers the body to release storehouses of fat and muscle so the body can use it for energy. There is another piece to the cortisol puzzle and that is is also slows everything down so the body can replenish energy stores.

We all have cortisol circulating in the blood at all times. But after stressful situations our cortisol levels increase dramatically. So let’s say for instance you are experiencing a constant stream of stressful situations. After enough of these episodes, the body adjusts its control mechanism in the pituitary gland to maintain a higher constant amount of cortisol in the body. Continually elevated levels of cortisol can have long-term health effects including but not limited to weight gain, heart disease, ulcers, insulin resistance, and hypertension. While cortisol may have served us well while we were a bunch of knuckle dragging Neanderthals fighting for our lives, 21st century living for the most part has kept us from facing daily life threatening situations. Unfortunately for most of us we have replaced those threats of the past with screaming bosses, unruly children and unreasonable partners all which can cause elevated levels of cortisol to be delivered into our bodies.

Stress is determined by what an individual perceives as stressful. The answer to balance lies in not taking things personally and finding ways to relax the mind and body. There have been many infomercials and advertisements touting the benefits of their “snake oil" to lower cortisol levels. Let me assure you, none of these claims are true and some of these marketers of these products are now facing indictments and large civil lawsuits. After talking with several physicians the answer is always the same, manage your physical and emotional stress levels. This can be achieved through, meditation, massage, long walks, deep breathing exercises, Yoga, Tai Chi, basically anything relaxing and of course spending time with people who comfort you. By practicing these relaxation methods you will be able to bring your cortisol levels down. This coupled with a healthy balanced diet and exercise will result in a long life and slim physique.
