Admit it, desktop computer is one of the few machines we love to hate and hate to love. Almost all of us have been in the situation where we are in the middle of an important project then suddenly our hard drive crashes. Puff! In an instant all our files are but a thing of the past---a really, really short-lived and painful past. To be honest, one can only hope that every problem and every glitch in the computer can be prevented.
Unfortunately, hoping that it will be avoided is different from actually being active in preventing it from happening. Remember, you are reading this not only to avert any computer meltdown but as well as your own mental breakdown. Mechanical failure may take us by surprise, however, we can at least halt any impending wreckage, right? How? Two words, computer maintenance.
The Culprit: Electrostatic Discharge (ESD)
Static failure, this is one of the common causes that triggers computer failure. One must realize that by performing internal maintenance, there is a chance of harming the core components of the machine. Note that an electric jolt need not be felt before electrostatic discharge can do its damage. A little over thirty volts, this will be sufficient to produce a shock that will create lasting damage to any computer.
Preventing ESD
Heard of the anti-ESD wrist strap? Well, experts use this to avoid any electric jolt by securely grounding the individual as he tweaks the internal components of the computer.
Cleaning one's Computer
Dust, this is more than an eyesore. Believe it or not, accumulation of dust may contribute to overheating and electrical shortage, and in extreme cases even fire. With this said, it is important that the dust be eliminated. However, it is of same importance that one knows how to properly remove the dust.
Blowing All Your Worries Away
Generally, people will immediately start blowing off the dust from any given part of the computer. This method usually works, regrettably, when the person begins to propel more than air, then that is a disaster waiting to happen. Imagine exposing your CPU to a sprinkling of saliva; this is not only gross but dangerous as well.
The Solution
First, you may choose to purchase a can of compressed air or second, you may buy a vacuum sweeper. Whatever device you pick, it does not really matter; it will safely remove dust either way.
System Maintenance
At any point where you will perform computer maintenance, you may also opt to do a system backup. With devices like external hard drives, flash drives, and DVDs, you can easily backup any data. We need to accept that data loss is simply inevitable. Remember the adage, it is better to be safe than sorry? This is more than appropriate with the topic at hand.
Hard Drive Maintenance
One of the most common maintenance errors is not executing regular maintenance (and this includes both disk check and defragmentation). It is advised that an individual run an error-check together with the defragmentation at least once in every thirty days. As for the backup, this can be done as frequently as needed.
These are only a few of the common mistakes when performing computer maintenance. The internet can supply you with hundreds more. But be certain that what you are indeed helping. You do not want to direct your computer towards its wreckage, right?
What Is Computer Maintenance
If you offer a fixed price for ongoing maintenance you would typically have sold them a network already and now you are taking care of it for x number of dollars per month. Your first instinct would be to also say you are offering this fixed price "subject to these restrictions." But, if you have just one paragraph let alone pages of "subject to" restrictions, this is a major turn off for any client.
So how do you protect yourself with fixed prices? You create a fixed price agreement that has a very tight scope to begin with. Rather than provide blanket coverage and then slowly take the blanket away with restrictions; give them only as much blanket as you have accounted for in your fixed price. The psychology changes: You are not taking away, now you are giving.
The other issue you must be concerned with when using fixed price agreements, is to maintain control of all moves, adds, and changes. You don't want the self pronounced computer guru at the company to start mucking around with your system. If they do, your fixed price will include the time it takes for you set things right again. To avoid this, you need to train the internal guru so he/she knows her limitations and knows when to call you.
Bottom Line on Fixed Prices
Fixed price maintenance contracts can be done. Your challenge when using them, is to make sure you have covered off as many contingencies as you can up front. This way you don't end up having to set up restrictions later on or risk losing your shirt. Fixed price contracts are an attractive selling feature but the onus is on you to do everything you can to make sure the time you are spending is adequately compensated.
