A hard disk drive or a hard drive as it may be called, stores digitally encrypted data. This data is stored on platters, which have a magnetic field, and these platters rotate rapidly. The hard disk drives were developed for use in computers. Today, they are the main features of computing systems across the globe. Right from the modest home computer to the more massive super computers, all rely upon the hard disk technology for their functioning.



Positive Features of Hard Disk Drives

The hard disk drives have many positive features. First and foremost is their size. For a relatively small size, they can store stupendous amounts of information. Then there is the fact of their ruggedness. Though the machinery itself is delicate, it is encased in such a hard casing that it can withstand most normal day-to-day shocks with ease.

However, the most important feature of the hard disk drives is definitely their computing abilities. They are based on random access memory. This makes it possible for a user to save time as opposed to normal tape drives in which the entire tape length has to be exposed to the given magnetic field before information can be retrieved.

One major factor that is important in every age and place is the cost factor. The hard disk drives are very cheap. This makes them accessible to the most modest consumers also. In fact, it is their cost that has made hard disk drives as popular as they are.

Negative Features

For all their monopolistic hold over the industry, the hard disk drives have certain negative features also. To begin with, they are mechanical devices by nature. Thus, they are subject to the usual wear and tear that such devices go through. They are infamous for crashing when you least expect them to. This can leave a user at a total loss of words and action. Hard disk drives for all their supremacy are based on technology that was initially developed several decades ago. Their basic design has not undergone any major change.

Alternatives to Hard Disk Drives

In spite of their technology being relatively outdated, the hard disk drives continue to enjoy a monopoly in the media for data storage owing to the above-mentioned factors. Till date, no new technology has been developed that can effectively remove them from their number one position. Now, however, there are signs that things may undergo subtle changes over the next few years and ultimately destroy the monopolistic stranglehold of the hard disk drives.

The new technology on the horizon is that of solid state devices. The solid state devices have neither vacuum tubes nor do they have mechanical operations. This term was first used in the 1960s, but the given technology has undergone a sea change since then.

In today's solid state devices the electrons flow through semiconductors, such as silicon. The solid state devices are much more reliable as compared to their counterparts. On account of the absence of mechanical machinery, they automatically have high resistance levels to both shocks and vibrations. Then again, as they do not have mechanical components, they are not subjected to the wear and tear associated with them. The most common solid state devices are the flash drives.

Flash Drives

The flash drives are a relatively new invention. Though they have been around since some time now, their role as possible, feasible alternatives to the hard disk drives is only now being granted due credibility. If the things keep moving at the existing rate of development in flash drives, then they may very well overtake the hard disk drives in the next couple of years as the primary data storage devices of the future.
