Prior to 1958 education in Tunisia was only available to a privileged minority. It is now given a high priority.

The Medina of Tunisia is the citys old quarter dating back to the 12th to the 16th century. Located in the old city the Medina, the Souks offer a selection of objects. The choice is yours, handcarved olive wood, salad bowls, kitchen articles, vases, lamps, bracelets and solid wood. Tunisia's main carpet and rug centres are Kairouan, Tunis, Tozeur and Jerba.

In southern Tunisia is Chott el Jerid it is a huge and dry salt lake situated in the most western part of the country. Only a traces of the water can be seen. The water surface changes it colour, from grey and blue up to intensively red, it depend of the prevalent kind of minerals in it.

Matmata is in the southern section of Tunisia is one of the places where scenes in Star Wars were filmed. The houses are vertically dug into the earth. The open-to-air central space has cave-like rooms dug into the sides. These houses were made to protect against the brutally hot desert sun as well as the cold desert nights.
