They talked and they convinced people whom I'm yet to know. They reach these people hearts (not just minds) through their existing bonds i.e. relationship. And I can't convince people whom I haven't met.

That's why Amazon attracts affiliates and willing to go the extra miles to help them. The affiliates in return, provide Amazon with ongoing revenue from the people who Amazon could not possibly meet or know.

Imagine the cost it incurs for Amazon if it were to sell to each and every person from every corner of the World?
Now, imagine the amount of profit it generates from recruiting a few souls and have them sell for Amazon indirectly. Isn't that sounds like every business owners dreams?
But if it's already a commodity, and thousands are promoting the same thing like e book, how we could be a class above?
Lets look at a popular marketplace for digital products; Clickbank.
Clickbank has more than hundreds and thousands of affiliate ready to promote its products. If an e book (digital product) came into the market, affiliates will literally race to promote it because they want to make money from it and that's what they do.
There's a big possibility that one affiliate will promote the same e book against each other.
That situation is good for Clickbank but could be hazardous to the affiliate. The profit cake has been sliced into smaller pieces, and it gets smaller with increased number of affiliates.

Invariably, these affiliates had developed the trust and bond for some times. You know this already.
