Mayotte is an overseas land of France consisting of two islands. Grande Terre which is the major island and Petite-Terre which is a smaller island. Mayotte was the only group of islands that was chosen to be a part of the French territory in 1974 rather than being an independent nation. Mayotte is an archipelago which also consists of a large number of small islands apart from these two islands and is divided into 19 canyons. Mayotte was under the observance of Portuguese but it was not their colony.



Mayotte is situated in the Indian Ocean at the end of the Mozambique Channel. The large island of Grande Terre is 39 kilometres in length and 22 kilometres in width. Mayotte was captured by Andriantosoly, it was then under the rule of Mhawli and then under several other colonial rulers, but it was able to successfully attain its independence in 1836. Euro is the currency of this arphicaelago and the main language spoken is French which is widely used in all the administrative work, taught in schools and is also widely incorporated in television programmes.

This group of islands has been able to develop unlike other French Comoro islands because of huge French aid which has helped it to get ahead in spite of its incomplete natural resources. You can not get a flight direct to this Island, however you can reach the Grand Comoro Island via plane and then you can board an inter island flight to reach Mayotte.
