In the holy city of Kairouan, there are over 50 mosques. The Great Mosque of Sidi Oqba is known for being the oldest mosque in North Africa. In the Dougga city too are strong ancient buildings, still beautifully standing and now a part of the lives of the 10,000 Tunisians living here. It is a great destination with an ancient Roman setting. Retreat to Matmata for that peace and quiet. This place is characterised by cave establishments, beautiful underground courtyards with people still living here while others have been turned into magnificent hotels.
