Many bow hunters enjoy the challenge of hunting au'naturale, but accuracy is of utmost importance when hunting, and many people are using a bow hunting sight to enhance accuracy. Most bow competitions now allow the use of a sight, and if you are in doubt about whether your competition allows sights, all you have to do is ask.
There are different types of bow sights available, and what you will need will depend greatly on the type of hunting you are about to do and your own personal preference. When making your decisions about a hunting sight, what you are planning on doing with your bow will, by and large, determine what you should buy. Buying a high priced target sight is not necessary if all you are going to do is hunt, because it is not necessary.
Most people actually shoot instinctively, much in the same way you throw a ball. You don't aim, you just throw it. Once you get used to bow hunting, sights will not be necessary in most cases, but most people do normally use sights of some sort, because most people don't have the time to devote to the extensive repetitive practice required to perfect shooting without bowsights.
Because of the arc of an arrow, and the need to aim upwards to increase the arc, thus making the arrow go farther, you actually need multiple aiming points for shooting different distances. They are usually color coded to make it easier, so you can just sight with the correct pin for the approximate distance you are going to shoot.
Though a pin type bow hunting sight has been used for years, the newest thing in bow hunting is to use fiber optic hunting sights. Fiber optics pulls in light to create a spot of light to aim for. The longer the fiber is, the brighter the point. There are also bow hunting sights that are fitted inside a protective pin guard, which is normally square. Some come from the side, and some from the bottom of the guard, and it is generally believed that there is greater accuracy with bottom guard mounted pins. There is also a moveable single pin bow hunting sight that you just adjust according to the distance you are going to shoot. Pendulum sights are also used for tree stand hunting. Some pendulum sights work very well, and some not so well, so it is a great idea to research before you shop, and consult an archery expert who is familiar with them, for some good advice.
Whitetail Deer Bow Hunting
Hunting has become an expensive investment for any hunter. For a newcomer, deciding on what type of equipment to get is a daunting task. Doing some research will be a time and money saver before even stepping foot into an archery store. The first decision to be made will be the type of bow, there are four major choices:
* Stick bows
* Recurves
* Compound bows
* Cross bows
In addition, every newcomer will probably need the following supplies:
* Sights
* Arrows
* Restrings
* Scopes
* Hunting gear cases
Aside from the bow, the most expensive, and possibly the most important tool a hunter will need is the scope. These vary greatly in price, from $50 to $250, and the quality is often reflected in that price; the better the lens, the higher the price.
There are many great options in between those two figures for the hunter to choose from. Doing a search in Yahoo! or Google with the scope name, and "reviews" will allow the hunter to determine if it's a scope worth his money. Scopes though, are generally only necessary for doing a lot of target shooting. There are standard and tree sights available that often serve the hunter much better than a scope.
Another great investment a hunter will need to make is his bow case. There are a few different types to choose from based on each hunter's needs. Hard bow cases are very durable, and can often carry two bows, many arrows, scopes and other supplies. They are often waterproof, and protect all your equipment from damage. These cases are great for travel, though the downside is that they are often impractical for hauling to a hunting sight.
Soft cases are the best available for that job. These cases are much smaller, often carrying just one bow and only a few supplies, but for this reason they are much easier to haul through the woods. A hybrid case is the last option available to the bow hunter. These cases are a mix of the two types; made of a harder, yet lightweight material. They are usually waterproof and easy to maneuver.
The best thing the new hunter can do is research to make the best equipment. Buying a cheap case will result in damaged tools, giving him faulty aim and headaches. Be sure to do as much research online, looking at reviews by other hunters, and talking to the expert at your local archery store.
