Novelty buttons are making a comeback. Especially humorous buttons. Collectible political buttons, which are also still very popular, but now, more and more "trendy types" are buying novelty buttons as a way to express themselves through funny graphic or slogan buttons. I prefer the graphic cartoon buttons.



As I grew a bit older from childhood, I decided I was a hippie by the time I reached my teens. I was way too original to have to wear some kind of decor to express myself. So I didn't.

Truth be told, we were hardly original. We knew exactly what we were going to ask our parents to buy us in the way of music, fashion, etc., after Sunday nights latest British invasion showcase on the Ed Sullivan Show.

Looking back, I can see that the sixties generation did have a little bit of originality. From that generation came some of the best music of that century. A whole new casual look of fashion evolved and it was more of what is your substance than who is your daddy. But still, we were in great need to express ourselves. I do not remember being very relaxed during that period of my life, nor did I do a good job of self-expression. Could buttons have helped? They help me now. I don't know if they would have then or not.

As opposed to my generation, we now live in one of a more subtle nature. Whereas we used to need a megaphone and loud voice, now all we need is the stroke of a keyboard, a blog and a few graphics.

People still want to talk about the virtual world as well. That is another place where it is fun and safe to express oneself. I love when people ask me "Do you have a website"? Its as if I have posted my pictures with all my tshirt/button/cap combos, which might not be a bad idea.

But being human, we still need real interaction. And interaction requires communications. There are days I just don't feel like talking much. My buttons and matching clothes do the talking for me, or, help gear the conversation into something in which I'm interested.
