You need to keep your documents for tax deductions and verification, and you need to keep them for 7 years to be on the safe side just in case you need it later. If you ruin your credit, it will be hard for you to get or do anything you want. Divorce papers are very important. If you lose them you can't get it back and you can get in trouble. These papers will specify your moral and financial obligations. If you don't live up to your financial obligations, you could even up in jail.
