Now, what is the biggest threat to the modern-day computer user? I think most would agree its spyware and other associated software such as adware or malware. It is absolutely vital to keep your computer as clean as possible, if you want an enjoyable computing experience.
So what is spyware exactly? I hear you ask.
Spyware is a piece of software written specifically to gather information
on a computer users surfing habits, normally for advertising purposes. This usually occurs in a rather underhand way without the user’s knowledge. You can get these bits of nuisance software just by downloading freeware or shareware programs, as the spy ware is attached to said programs without you realizing it. Some of the more unscrupulous software companies have been known to engage in these activities, but not the reputable ones.
One by-product of this pesky software is you may notice your computer running slower. This is the aspect which annoys me more than any other.
So what can I do to prevent spyware from getting into my computer? I hear you ask.
Well, your best course of action is to be extremely careful about what you download. Also, when installing freeware or shareware programs, keep an eye on checkbox options during the setup routine.
What can I do to get rid of these pesky bits of software once my machine becomes infected?
First, read up on the subject as much as you can. A website such as this one that I have put together [see below] contains a wealth of in-depth information, tips and advice.
Second, there are many anti-spyware programs available, some free, some not.
What I have found is there is not one single program which will get rid of all variants of spyware. So I usually run two or three on my machine.
Adware or Malware are closely related problems which I will deal with in future articles.
I stress again the importance of learning about this subject, and acting on your new-found knowledge if you want to have a productive and enjoyable time on your computer.
