Wilson Jones Binding Machine
Overview:
The GBC KomboCoil 200 is a manual desktop color coil binding machine with an electric spiral coil inserter.
Formerly known as the Ibico Kombocoil 200, this machine is designed for a home business or small office that is looking to create their own high quality professional documents using spiral coil.
This sleek and stylish machine utilizes the same great design as many of the other pieces of GBC binding equipment that are available on the market.
Strengths / Features:
The GBC KomboCoil 200 includes a heavy duty manual 4:1 pitch spiral coil binding punch that is capable of punching up to twenty sheets of 20lb paper at a time. This machine punches the GBC 0.2475 hole pattern which uses 44-hole round holes that are evenly spaced along the binding edge of the document. Generally, this hole-pattern is only available on large modular binding punches. The GBC Kombocoil is the only desktop binding punch on the market that utilizes a 44 hole-pattern.
This machine comes with a pair of GBC premium spiral coil crimping pliers. These pliers are incredibly useful for cutting and crimping the ends of your coil elements so that they do not spin back off your bound books. These premium coil crimpers have a retail value of almost $60.
The KomboCoil 200 is designed for use with standard 4:1 pitch spiral coil binding supplies. This means that it can be used for binding documents with a wide variety of sizes and colors. Four to one pitch coils are available in sizes ranging from 6mm (1/4") up to 50mm (2") and in over sixty different colors. Although it is possible to bind books with any of these sizes or colors of coil, the inserter on this machine is designed for use with coils between 6mm and 18mm. Larger coils may need to be inserted by hand.
The Kombo Coil 200 is a sleek and stylish binding machine that uses the same form factor as the WireBind W400 and the CombBind C400e. This design is compact, stylish and makes binding easy.
Weaknesses / Limitations:
The primary weakness of the KomboCoil 200 has to do with its coil inserter. At first glance the coil inserter seems to be excellent. It has a large rubber roller that should make spinning the coils onto your books simple. However, there is a design flaw in the coil inserter. The large rubber roller is driven by a smaller roller inside the machine. After six months or a year of use this smaller roller will tend to wear a groove in the large rubber roller and it will no longer spin. The roller can be flipped with a little bit of work but eventually a groove will wear into the other side of the roller and the coil inserter will no longer operate.
The maximum binding width of the Kombocoil 200 is eleven inches. It does not have any disengageable dies which means that it cannot be used to bind smaller document lengths. This means that this machine is only designed for punching letter sized sheets. If you need to punch legal, A4, half size or landscape documents then the KomboCoil 200 is not a great fit for your needs.
Recommendation:
Although the GBC KomboCoil 200 includes several great features, it has a major design flaw in its coil inserter. Over time, the inserter will almost definitely stop working.
With this in mind, it is difficult to recommend the Kombo Coil 200 for users who bind more than a few documents per week.
The only exception would be for users who are looking for a binding machine with a 44 hole 0.2475 punching pattern. However, if that is the case you may need to live with the limitations of the spiral coil inserter.
