Today though we talk of equality in various forms in the American society, if we have to answer sincerely whether we have managed to eradicate discrimination of all forms in our society, the answer sadly is ?No?. One of the glaring discriminations that we still endure is the sex discrimination. We have done well with drafting laws against such discriminations but our minds are still where we were 50 years ago, 100 years ago. One of the clear evidences is the fact that we have established Executive Order on discrimination based on ?sex? within the Federal Government in 1967. How far have we succeeded in implementing this Executive Order? Can we boast of having an equal distribution or nearly equal distribution of men and women in the Federal Government? The question forces itself to be a rhetorical one and we know the answer already.
One of the basic reasons for this discrimination is based on the misconception that women are of ?weaker sex?. For long, we did not protest against the use of such a term we readily submitted to this term and we were happy to enjoy the trivial perks that came with this nomenclature. Here we are today, trying to stand up on our feet with the pressure of submission that we have exercised in the past that thrusts on our shoulders. However, this is not the time to find fault or point fingers. It is high time that we start equipping ourselves so that we qualify when we get the right opportunities. We need to look for women mentors who deliver; a coach who has experience in training women in the art of survival and excellence in a world of competition.
When we are preparing ourselves to meet the challenges of this corporate world, it is important that we find someone who will understand us better and who has been in our shoes before. There are many mentors who advertise themselves to be the best but not all of them deliver what they promise. Only a mentor who is genuinely interested in your success and in the uplifting of women will be able help you realize your full potential. Therefore, it is just not about the theoretical knowledge that is gained from books that will make a mentor an expert but it is their ability to put that knowledge to practical application guided by their own experience, which will make them an expert.
