Home-based data entry work has become immensely popular. A quick search on any search engine will validate that point. Such popularity is easy to understand given the relative simplicity of the work coupled with the current employment picture which shows more and more people losing their jobs and, therefore, looking for ways to make money.

As with all things on the Internet, there is a great deal of information and misinformation surrounding this subject and, unfortunately, this all gets comingled and causes considerable confusion for those who are looking for honest information.

So, for starters, let's set the record straight---work at home data entry jobs are very real. Say, ten years ago, such jobs may have been rare-to-non-existent. The global economy, the home business revolution, and the turbulent traditional job market have all combined to create an emerging new niche in the realm of web processing and virtual office support. More and more companies---many of them Fortune 500 companies---are finding it to their benefit to outsource routine clerical work and the compensation is sufficient to replace a worker's traditional salary and can even go to levels that are quite impressive.

It appears that most of these jobs are obtained through resource companies that usually charge a registration or membership fee---usually in the range of $29-$49---which gains access to training and actual job sources. This is one particular area where a lot of Internet police get off track. Paying the resource companies their registration fee is perfectly valid---it is not a scam, provided you deal with reputable ones, but you absolutely do not want to pay an employer to get a job. A beneficial side note here: the word "scam" should be used carefully and accurately. Scams are certainly in abundance everywhere and in everything and the Internet is no exception. Nobody wants to be victimized, but people that plaster scam alerts all over the Internet tend to get carried away and that is just as wrong as the scams themselves. While researching the data entry topic, I think I came across it all.

As opposed to being directly hired by a company to perform data entry from home, there are sites where you can bid on available projects, with the work being awarded to the lowest bidder, of course. You can set up a profile where you can showcase your skills and experience and describe the type of work you are interested in. Employers can also list projects which they are wanting to outsource.

The skill levels required to perform data entry at home are just as varied as the work categories themselves. There is something for everyone---some jobs require little-to-no experience and some required a bit more expertise. Several of the resource sites that you can join actually provide on-site training to help you get the skills you may need or to help you brush up if you're rusty.

Another source I uncovered provides an online training course which results in certification as a web processing specialist and they guarantee you a position with a Fortune 500 company.
