Working from home is not as easy as it seems. I should know because I have been in this job for more than six years now. I am an outsourced graphic design artist and I do most of my work from the very same desk I use as my dining table. Though it may sound unpalatable (pun intended), working from home has its advantages and disadvantages.

1. Time management. This is the greatest culprit known to home workers. If you cannot manage your time properly, then there is no point in working at home. There are just too many things that can distract you when you work from home ? chores, kids, bed, books, television. Remember, if you work from home, you have to treat it as if you are working in an office. This means that you have to follow a certain regimen to make this arrangement succeed. As a graphic designer, I make it a point that the company will have something to work on at the end of the week or else, they would also fail to deliver to our client. Discipline is essential to make this arrangement work.

2. Considering work from home arrangement as less serious than a 'traditional' job. Your office may not be as glamorous as the 30 storey building at the heart of the financial district or you may not need to be in power outfits to go about your work. But working from home is as important as any other job. Consider these things (i.e. not commuting, not dressing up) as your advantages rather than viewing your home work as less serious.

3. Not investing in important equipment. Surely you must have something to work on. If you don't own a laptop or a computer and just rely on your favorite internet caf? then you must think again. You have to invest on the resources to be more productive. As a graphic designer, I started investing on a powerful computer and a large LCD monitor to make my work easier. Next, I acquired the software needed for my job. I also invested in a good internet service provider to make my submissions to more easily. Basically, you have to shell out some money for you to make this arrangement work.

No one said it is going to be easy. If you decide to work from home then you must do everything to make this arrangement work. There is just one tip I would leave you, and that is discipline - you have to be very disciplined to make it successful.
