Neuropathy is a painful condition caused by damaged nerves. It can cause a host of problems including dizziness, weakness, numbness to the extremities, and painful sensations like tingling and burning. It can also cause remittent soreness in the muscles of the legs and lower arms. It can be brief, last for years or never go away.
Before I started chemo, I was told about the possible side effects ? loss of hair (not a possibility but a definite), nausea, fatigue, mouth sores and the one that I was concerned about the least - neuropathy. There are many different chemo drugs used to treat lymphoma, and the one cited most often to cause neuropathy is vincristine (Oncovin) or the ?O? in CHOP. I had experienced this drug on six occasions.
I had my last chemo in June, and it wasn't until November that I started to have problems with my elbows. The pain reached the point to where I had to get cortisone shots, which only provided temporary relief. My elbows bothered me for almost two years.
I blamed my bad elbows on the thunder sticks I had used at the Angels baseball games for months. If you watched the 2002 baseball playoffs and the World Series, you most likely noticed these weapons of mass destruction. Basically, they look like inflatable bats that when banged together make a deafening noise. During the playoffs and World Series, I (as did everyone in the stadium) used these nonstop for nine innings. While the elbows didn't hurt at the end of the World Series, I was hearing impaired.
It wasn't until my husband told me he thought I had neuropathy that I even thought that was the cause. After all, months had passed since I had vincristine. I assumed if I had problems, it would be during the treatments, not months later. Apparently, what I experienced months after treatment isn't that unusual; although I'm still not convinced I had neuropathy. I think it's most likely that I had a vulnerable area that was made worse by overuse.
Work Related Injury Lawyer
A good friend of mine was one of the unlucky few that had taken fen-phen as a diet aid, but also one of the fortune ones, who suffered no ill affects. Although she had no fen-phen symptoms, she decided to get tested, which was a smart move. If the now infamous drug had injured her, she would have needed a clean fen-phen diagnosis from a reputable doctor to begin a lawsuit.
Needless to say, my friend was relieved when her fen-phen diagnosis came back as a negative for PPH or any vascular of valvular damage. Prior to her news, she had already begun to contact fen-phen lawyers; one of them was a very high profile fen-phen attorney. Since I was helping her, I decided to do my own research and find out what the main symptoms of fen-phen related damage were.
Many fen-phen symptoms can be ambiguous, making a fen-phen diagnosis difficult to ascertain, particularly if the physician in question is not well versed on the subject of PPH as caused by the now defunct drug. Adding to the problem is the fact that some or the signs of PPH (primary pulmonary hypertension) mimic an innumerable amount of illness, further obscuring fen-phen diagnosis.
Symptoms to look out for are racing pulse of heart palpitations, swelling in the extremities, fainting spells, dizziness, weakness and fatigue. These symptoms do not get better with rest or lying down. Unchecked, the exhaustion becomes debilitating, making it impossible to perform daily tasks. Ignoring the issue, i.e., not attempting to get a fen-phen diagnosis, can lead to permanent heart failure that has to be controlled by medicines. Some people with PPH or damage to their hearts may not even show signs of the conditions on early onset.
.
That is why it is not only important to know what fen-phen symptoms are, but to also go to a doctor with a reputation for handling similar cases, so you can guarantee a proper fen-phen diagnosis, as my acquaintance did.
My friend got a clean bill of health. Many people were not so lucky. Don't play games with something as invaluable as your life; seek out medical attention to obtain a fen-phen diagnosis. If it turns out that you were injured, don't hesitate to retain the services of a good fen-phen attorney, so you don't have to pay financially as well as physically, for someone else mistake.
