There are a lot of advantages to working at home including the ability to control you own schedule, having greater control over you own destiny, and the personal satisfaction of personal accomplishment. Working at home does have its challenges such as potential loneliness, the need for greater discipline, and the potential for distraction. However for this article focuses some of the many benefits

Controlling Your Own Schedule

The first big advantage to working at home is the ability to control your own schedule. Some of us are day people, others work best in the dead of night, and some like to work in two hour spurts with power naps in between. The bottom line is that when you work at home you can find the schedule that works best for you. Another big advantage is that while others are wasting time and money commuting to work you can make money working on your projects. Finally, you have the ability to plan vacations when it is convenient for you. If you want to work hard for a few weeks and then take a few days off you can. Freedom is one of the big advantages of controlling your own schedule.

Controlling Your Own Destiny

In addition to controlling your schedule you also have a lot of control over how much money you make. If you want to work lots of hours so you can put together a down payment on a new car you can do so. When you are ready you can take on bigger or more complex jobs you can without the hassles of office politics. You choose the vendors you work with and the ones that are just not a good fit for you. Also, you chose the type of projects that fit your talent best and can pass on the rest. Being in charge of your own destiny is a good thing!

Personal Satisfaction

One of the biggest advantages of working at home is the personal satisfaction of taking control of your life and achieving your goals. Over time as you learn more about the work at home industry, and develop a strong reputation you will become a sought after contractor. As you continue to get better companies will want you working on their projects and will give you bigger and potentially more lucrative things to do.

Take the First Step

Like anything that is worth doing, it takes hard work and commitment to become a full time independent home worker. However, the rewards go way beyond just the money. You will have more control over who you work with, more control over your money, greater flexibility in your time off, and the personal satisfaction of becoming an expert in your field. But, you do need to proceed cautiously. If you are currently employed you should take the time to test working at home on a part time first. That will give you a chance to build up some clients and make sure that it is right for you before you make it a full-time commitment. Taking baby steps will make it much easier to find the right niche for you and to lay the proper foundation for success. But, the key is to take the first step. You deserve it.

Working At Home Part Time

Thousands of people decide to start working at home running their own small business every year. There are all types of people making this decision for all sorts of reasons. Many of them are stay at home moms who need an extra income but there are senior citizens who need to earn a supplemental income and disabled people who want to make money working at home. They will all have one thing in common: when you work at home, you have to learn to deal with the distractions.

When you work at home, there are built in distractions that don't even seem like interruptions to your day. These are usually insignificant things like deciding to have an extra cup of coffee at breakfast, spending a bit longer lying in the bath, having a "quick look" at the newspaper, chatting to friends when they phone you, stopping to tidy a room on your way through, taking your time browsing when you go to the shops for an essential item, taking the dog for an extra long walk. If you did all those things on the same day, imagine how much time you would waste. If you also spend some time reading your mail, have an extra half hour at lunch and a couple of extra breaks to make tea, you will have filled your day but you will not have used it productively.

If you add up the extra minutes and hours stolen from your work at home schedule, you will be surprised and probably horrified at how much time you have wasted. The examples used above are not extremes, they are just everyday things that you could do without really noticing and, if you let down your guard, you end up having achieved nothing and wondering "where did my day go?".

All the small distractions I have mentioned could be dealt with easily. For example, if you really want an extra cup of coffee at breakfast time, take it and drink it while you are doing some paperwork. Save the luxurious bath as your reward when you complet your day's to do list and take a shower instead. Tell your friends you won't be taking calls during your working hours and let the answering machine pick up your calls during those hours.

Distractions are particularly dangerous when you are about to start a task you dislike or find difficult. It will be tempting to postpone starting work while you check your mail, have another cup of coffee, or have a quick peek at the news. If you allow yourself to lose focus for an instant, you can lose hours of valuable time without even noticing its passing. If you are distracted by something this should not be used as an excuse to put things off and change your schedule. You must be able to regain your focus and get straight back into your work when distractions occur.

It is the ability to focus which enables you to prevent a momentary interruption from turning into wasted hours. The keys to working at home successfully are the ability to focus and the ability to exercise self-disipline.
