Kitchen Appliances Over Time

Our grandmothers cooked with a saucepan, a bowl, a knife and a wooden spoon. These days we have the option of buying numerous appliances to make cooking the family meal easier. Whether they actually do or not is sometimes debatable, but one thing's for sure, they make more washing up than one bowl.

However, they do save us money and time in some cases. Take the bread ovens of today. They do all the kneading and there's no worry about what to do with that lump of dough that didn't rise. Some young wives buried theirs in the back yard, only to find it rose magnificently after several more hours. Now all that guesswork is taken out and we can have fresh bread ready to eat when we come home from a hard day at the office. The new bread maker from Kenwood has a 15-hour delay and so many options you could be forgiven for becoming confused.

We can whip up delicious deserts and lots of other things with mixers of various kinds all at the touch of a button, knob or switch. Gran measured out her ingredients with a cracked cup, but we can do it with an electronic weigh and add feature on our brand new food processor. Will that make our cakes taste better than Gran's? I doubt it.
