My Dutch Oven And Family Campout

The weather is getting warmer, the days are getting longer, kids are out of school. That can only mean one thing: summer is upon us. Summer in my family means one thing: camping season. Our favorite vacation destination is somewhere high in the mountains, far from any sign of civilization. I do not know what makes camping so appealing. Is it the serenity, the solitude, the beauty of nature? Is it the quietness, the fresh air, the escape from all stresses, worries, and cares of "real life"? Sleeping on the ground? Living without running water and hot showers? Whatever it is, there is nothing like the great outdoors. Fishing, hiking, or just relaxing, there is something for everyone. One thing I do know is that one of the best parts of "roughing it" is eating. No matter how hard you fight it, you always eat way too much.

There is nothing like outdoor food. I sincerely can't relate to you what it is that makes it so diverse. Something about the crisp air gives you a better experience with your food. Cooking with fire and charcoal give a flavor to food unlike any other cooking method. No matter how many outdoor cookouts you have attended, you have not come into contact with the best in outdoor cooking unless you've already experienced the best tasting food that comes out of a dutch oven stove. A cast iron dutch oven used to cook your meal very slow creates a very desirable flavor.

A big advantage to using a dutch oven is that they can be used for any meal: breakfast, dessert, and every other meal can be prepared. Meat, casserole, soup: you name it, if it's edible, it can probably be prepared in a dutch oven. Since dutch ovens are stackable, a three or four course meal can be made all in the same hour.

Perhaps the best attribute to cooking with a dutch oven is the fact that once you start cooking, you really don't have to do anything until it is done. This allows you for more freedom to recreate and do whatever you would like while you wait for your delicious food to be cooked.

When checking to see how much longer the food needs to be cooked in a dutch oven, be watchful or you will sprinkle your lunch with some natural salt and pepper. This special kind of salt and pepper is essentially ash that falls off the lid of the dutch oven as it is being removed from the dutch oven stove. It doesn't taste bad, and it's not unhealthy. Many campers even enjoy the added texture. Just hope that you aren't with one of those campers.

What about dessert? Dutch ovens are famous for giving us tasty desserts, whether its some apple crisp or the very famous peach cobbler, nothing is more tasty than dutch oven dessert. They become irresistible, and just writing about it is making my mouth water right now. Remember that you aren't only limited to peach and apple, you can use nearly any fruit you like. You don't have to be a professional dutch oven chef either to make these desserts. They are simple, somewhat quick and can be done by anyone who knows a thing or two about cooking. There are many simple dutch oven recipes out there so be sure to check out what you think you're family would prefer.
