Before Kids Start Cooking |
|
So often we all feel the need for a help in the kitchen. This is the case especially with working moms who have to handle so many different fronts apart from the work front, the kitchen and the kids. But most of us cannot afford to keep a help, so what do we do? Well, teach your kids the art of good cooking when they are still young and willing to learn and adapt. Lead by example and you'll be surprised to see the results. The first lesson that they should receive is in cleanliness. It is imperative to good health and good cooking. They should be taught to wash the vegetables and fruits properly and not to mix the raw and the cooked food. They should also understand that overheating food may lead to loss of nutrients and undercooking may cause indigestion. Discuss the entire recipe with the kids before you all start cooking. This will ensure that you don't miss out on anything and that all the ingredients are in place and the entire cooking process goes on smoothly. Try to stick to the exact procedure for the best results. While discussing the recipe or while cooking, explain to the kids how and why a particular appliance is used. Also teach them the importance of saving electricity and also how to protect themselves from getting an electric shock while operating the electrical appliances. The kids must also know how to protect themselves from burns by always using hot pads while picking up or keeping the utensils on hot stove. Also teach them never to put a hot spoon or hot food in their mouth because it could result in serious burn injury to the tongue and inner regions of the mouth. Always keep a first aid kit in the kitchen and show the kids where it is kept. Keep your knives in brand new condition all the time. The kids should also be taught to use the knife properly and safely. A knife is as useful as it is dangerous in the kitchen. The kids should be taught to never put the knives in soap water to avoid anyone getting cut while doing the dishes. The kids should be taught about why not to put water in fire and to immediately call for adults, neighbors and 911 in case of any emergency. The kids should be aware of the health problems that can be caused by semi-cooked food and even by tasting it. Also taste food with a different spoon every time you have to. Use the free time during cooking to clean the dishes, kitchen counter, to put the balance unused ingredients and appliances in place. Let your children cook a little right from the beginning so that at a later stage in life they can cook for themselves when need arises and not rely on junk food.
